Last time out I ran into some slush on a small lake I fish but that should be frozen now with all the cold weather I would think. Three of my buddies are coming up Friday to fish for three days so watch out fish. We should be hitting a bunch of lakes so I should have a full report early next week. It seems the fishing has been picking up a little from the people I have talked to but I haven't been out a whole lot myself yet. Everything I have gotten so far has been on the small side but I'm going to some different lakes so who knows.

Just the top 2-3". Are slush after you drill. you can find spots where there is slush already. But overall its pretty good.

Thanks for the updates guys!! It will really help with our decision process leading up to next weekend. If anybody makes it out this weekend, please update me on anything you find with slush, snow, and ice conditions. It's greatly appreciated, thanks!

Graybuck....

I hope all is well with you and your family. Yep, were coming up chasing trout. Camping this time, hope that -37 weather will take a break for a couple weeks. We still don't know where we're staying or fishing. Bill B informed us of slush conditions as of Monday, I'm hoping the deep freeze took care of most of it. We would like to stay at the campsite on the west side this year. If that doesn't pan out, we've got a couple more ideas on where to camp and fish. The Canada trip was a good time, Mahoney came out from PA, the rest of the crew was made up by Bushwac, Gissert(&Warden), TBone, and WallEYES crew. Didn't get into many lakers, but the crappie bite was fun, sled travel only. We're heading back up in March, Geeman might be on this years list.

TimO.....

I was able to get into about 8 crappies, kept 2 the rest were smallish. I think I had a decent walleye on that I lost at the hole. Took Harley out for the evening bite but it was non-existent, they only bit that morning. Other than that it was family holiday time. I'll be up a couple more times before the ice is out, probably stop by and see ya then.

I must be getting older, as I haven't been out lately on account of the cold weather. Was up at LOW on Tuesday, slow bite, only 10 in the bucket for 2 guys, we could've left by noon. Was out on Bowstring last night, no slush that I saw, but I'd still use caution. Only vehicle traffic was on the road going off the north access.

Duffman, finally hit some of the lakes and found pockets of slush on some of the smaller lakes we fished. Even with all the cold weather. One spot we set up and the water came gushing out of the holes. Jessie and Bowstring had slush earlier but they were froze up now. Fishing was OK but not fast and furious. Got some crappies on the string and a couple of smaller lakes and was shut out on walleye on Jessie.

Thanks for all the info guys, but it looks like I'm pulling the plug on this trip. One of my crew went down with a broken leg on Saturday, sled accident. So the rest of us thought about just forgoing the camping trip, and doing day trips to trout lakes, but with that tundra forcast, I don't think it'd be that fun heading out in the morning at -25 to -30.

Maybe a trip later in the season.

merc.... ahhhhh the mythical Jessie lake winter walleye. Maybe this is the year I slay that beast. grin.gif

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
