Iceweasle, were you the one behind me? I was the one in the green otter, and who caught the 5.4# pike.

Here's a couple pictures of Big Mike at the contest - his first time ice fishing. We had a blast - just couldn't connect with the pike we wanted.

The thumb in the 2nd photo belongs to biglakeba$$. You may notice that there's no fish slime or scales on his hands ...... can anybody guess why???

Excellent job at the tournament F.M.ers. Me and the fishkid and friends had a great time again. Nice to see everyone. Looked like a pretty good turnout. Wish we could have hung around but like usual I had a hockey game to coach. I need to try to get my hockey team to one of the events. Next stop is the Minnetonka tourny. Good luck to all trout fishing up in the great white north!

MedMan and Brent how's the car working out, did you kids get that fixed and thanks MM for loaning me the Aquaview. It's always great to see fish and not catch hardly any.

Deitz,

Thanks for letting myself and my son tag along after the event. Nathaniel really enjoyed showing his dad up by catching more fish! Of course I told him it was because I was letting him use my vex and not because he is a better fisherman. It couldn't be that I spend more time helping him and rigging other rods than fishing?

Matt--thanks for the fish! They are going in the pan tonight. Watch for an e-mail.

Hanson--good to meet you in person as well and for giving me a quick look at your URL stash!

Dave (ATV moderator)--enjoyed talking and fishing next to you later in the day. It always amazes me when you meet someone and find out that you are almost neighbors!

I had a great time meeting everybody and can't wait for the Rush event.

Another great event!! I'm pretty surprised at the number of people who showed up to brave the blizzard. If anybody else was out there at 5am, it wasn't looking too good.

Medicine has a lot of fish to catch and that was pretty evident. Crappies and bluegills were everywhere.

It was good to meet a few more FMers- Team BuzLogic (buzbunni & the Logician), behorn, tripleplay, holehopper, wastewaterguru, BigLakeBa$$, Captain B.R.K., Dave, Kylersk and others.

Kylersk- I'll send you the photos I took of that Pike when they get developed. We can see who's the better cameraman- MJ or myself. grin.gif

I want to put a plug in for the Cool Cats event coming up in March!! I went up to the chain Sunday after the Med event and did a little 'pre-fishing.' Ended up catching 5 cats once I figured out what in the heck they wanted. It will be a fun event and those cats are fun to catch.

It was a very nice event. Glad to hear everyone had a good time and caught some fish. I kicked around with Mr. Special all day and I think his bad luck lately rubbed off on me. Went back out last night and caught a few crappies. Nothing to brag about but at least felt something on the line.

One more thing. I wound up policing the area a little for garbage. There were several beer bottles and empty coffee cans and things laying all over in one area. I doubt that it was anyone from the tournament but what a mess.

Thanks FM, Thanks Matt and BDR for the toothy hot spot! Thanks Dennis Steel for the ride back to wheigh in so I could get that pike back in the lake. smile.gif That fish gave me the tail fin and ran.

We fished for pike all day with tip ups. We had about a 6 flags and a couple chewed up minnows. Sure would have liked to have seen those fish and was a blast raceing HoleHopper JR to the flags, only one problem............. I cant move and wont be able to for a couple of days. grin.gif

Hanson, you didnt wait for me. grin.gif

I would have loved to have fished after the turney with you guys but Mrs. HoleHopper had diferent idias about the evenings events confused.gif We did go back on sunday and cought a couple of Crappies and Sunneys. I never seen the Marcom light up like that befor! shocked.gif

I dont think I will be able to make the Laker event for lack of $'s. See everyone at The Minnatonka Event!

Hey Guys, My buddies and I had a great time fishing Saturday, to bad we had to leave so early afterwards, one of the buddies wifes was sick and she was also watching our kids to, so we figured we better get home right away to save our butts!!! grin.gif The Crappie bite was amazing, we had to catch at least 75 in one spot, thanks again to Medman for passing on the hotspot to Ole. Maybe next year we can stick around a little longer to meet and fish with more F'mers!! grin.gif

GOOD LUCK AND GOOD FISHING!!!

Deitz,

Originally I had planned on hitting the Tonka event but a nephew called and was looking for a partner for the Forest Lake contest. Maybe I'll show up at the Rush event with a new truck or looking a little richer!

We are planning on trying to do some real fishing after the FL contest so I'm not totally selling out for the prizes as I would really like that Marcum or Otter to move to my house as well! (I told Nathaniel that if we win the Marcum he can have my new FL-8, so I can tell you what he was rooting for this past Saturday.) He would probably be the only 12 yr old on the lake with his own electronics! Of course if anybody watched on Saturday afternoon it would have been hard to tell that it wasn't his as he always seemed to be fishing in the hole with the transducer!

See you at Rush.

This was my first ICE Event and I have to say it was a great event. I think the staff at FM deserves a big “at a boy” for their dedication to the sport and all the time and effort, that I can only imagine goes into putting on all these events year around. It was nice to hear that some of the members got to head out and fish with the FM staff after the event. The next event I had on my schedule was the Rush Lake event but this event was so much fun I may show up for the Minnetonka event.

See you guys on the ice

Yes it is true - this was my first time ever ice fishing... being from California, I've never brought myself to do the ice fishing thing - open water, now that is a different story grin.gif! I was out with BigLakeBa$$, Perchjerker & Giant Jerkpot (It was nice meeting the dave's! wink.gif). They hooked me up for some panfish and got a few sunnies & perch and missed a bass at the hole!

To all of the guys who put it on, great job! Very well planned event... and an amazing turnout. I would've helped with setup, but being that I don't ice fish I might've been more of a hinderance than a help. LOL.

I am also really embarrassed to admit that it was my little green escort blocking the plowed ice road blush.gif - which someone quickly and nicely confused.gif informed me of when I got back to my car... When I got there at 7:15 it was all parking - the no parking signs & cones were not up or ice roads plowed at that point. I didn't realize they had put the signs up or plowed until after we got back to the weigh in (because I was out on the lake with BLB & Company). I apologize if I was blocking the way or made it difficult for those coming and going - I would've never parked there had the signs been up earlier, I just parked where they told me... my bad.

All in all - a good first ice fishing experience...heck you guys may even see me out there for the Tonka event. I promise to not block the road this time tongue.gif LOL.

You just wanted to keep people off the lake so you could win. tongue.gif

HAHA - 'cha right on winning LOL, did you see those pictures of my mini-sunny & perch... oh wait, of course you saw them, that was your trademark thumbsdown in my picture. You're just jealous because I almost caught a bass grin.gif and you got just a couple mini-fish shocked.gif! LOL

Thanks to BLB & company for showing me the ropes to ice fishing! Come open water, I'll be showing him the ropes to catching big smallmouth tongue.gif Just teasin'!

Buzbunni & Logician - if I knew you guys were out there I would've said hey... We'll have to hook up for some smallies again this summer.

I had a great time. Thanks to Matt and BDR. I asked them to put me on a panfish spot.......I didn't stop catching them from the minute I put my first line down the hole. Wish I would have gotten out to meet a few more people, but I was just enjoying the sunny bite. Went home with a limit of sunnies and crappies and the wife, kids and I enjoyed a nice meal and had a few left over for the freezer.

See ya on Tonka.

What a great time had at my first IceLeaders event! Looking forward to many more.

Got to meet some new faces: Hanson, loc9fisher , Dennis Steele, Renneberg, Pete R. along with Dietz, Matt Johnson and others! Looking forward to meeting more along the way.

Got on a good sun fish bite for the day. HEY Dietz- I feel dissed you didn't put me in the video grin.gif I was less than 2 truck lengths away from your video shoot!

Just like to say Thank You to all our great sponsors! What a great way to allow people to view your products by having a raffle at the end of the event. JUST some great prizes over all. I sure hope those that won the otter house, LX-3 and etc. appreciate those prizes and continue to help our sponsors. They are what makes us go day in and day out here on FM.

loc9fisher- Thanks for the tip on a hot crappie bite. Bklimek and I hooked up and fish your spot. First holes we drilled, stayed there for 3 hours and caught 83 crappies between both of us. LIGHTS out!

Lure of choice was a Custom Jigs and Spins- pink/glow size 8 demon with a small plastic fished wacky style! THAT's 83 crappies caught on plastic presented wacky style .

Just an awesome bite folks! Again thanks loc9fisher ......Hanson, you missed out on a tremedous bite cool.gif

FOR all you folks that plan on fishing Medicine Lake in the future, just stop into Harty's Bait and Tackle . Joe has great variety of baits and gives top notch customer service !

Thanks again Joe and it was nice meeting you!!!

Didn't think I would ever hear that phrase on FM.

As a matter of fact, I couldn't keep Darrin away from my house. grin.gifgrin.gif I've been filmed a number of times now and hope to make a video sooner or later. I'm not sure if its my striking good looks or my fish catching ability which is preventing it but they'll figure it out sooner or later. blush.gif

Matt, Sorry I missed the outing, but I was working at Gander mountain. I had to get up at 3:00AM to open bait shop at 5:00AM. I left gander at 1:30 and all I wanted was a bed to sleep on. I am also working the weekend of the minnetonka outing. NOTE: to FMer's if you need bait and live in the south metro swing in to ganders bait shop, as I'll be doing the bait shop thing.

Well, I had the alarm set for midnight, so I got up and checked the radar only to see a little snowsquall showing up, so I'm getting ready to hop in the shower when all of a sudden at 12:30 the hurricane hit. I think the first half-hour it was going about 60mph, then it seemed to settle down to a constant 45-50. This was NOT good ! All the on top of it all preparing that was done, all the conversations with Dennis beforehand was now wiped out by the Snowami Blizzard. So since I live right at the coldest and windiest place on the planet, I had to put in the earplugs so I could sleep until 3:00. Headed down to see how bad 9" of fresh fallen snow looks after it gets hurdled a couple of miles over open space at 50mph. Looked at the clock which was now at 3:30 and all the guys will be there by 5:00. I had to boogie and I needed all 8000 pounds of that truck to get it done. crazy.gif I thought there is no way this thing is going to happen and the prostaffs job would now be to tell everyone it is being cancelled. I could not really see what I was doin but having done this for so many years now I really was put to the test. The roads were going to have to wait until daylight but I figured I could turn this parking lot into something useful. The first thing I noticed was the roadking with a light on just a little ways up, I drove over to it and saw the FM sticker on it and figured this guy means business, so I opened and shut the door real hard to see if I could see a face pop up....nothin ! Went back to work and later found out it was Paul Waldowski just sacked out with a freakin hurricane goin on.....this guy is serious I thought and then he comes in the baitshop and is the biggest hoot I've ever seen at the lake....Too funny Paul, and a pleasure to meet and hang out with you for a bit. Dennis looks at me and says......this is not good ! I called all my help at 5:00 and said to go back to bed we have a hurricane goin on down here....that was a mistake !

Reeled them back in and even got the help of Moby and Medman...thanks guys so much ! Now what I'm really bummed about is the fact that I had to leave for the day and when I get done this contest is going to be over and everyone will be gone! All the planning, anticipation, shelf stocking, baittank loading, sleepless nights, an open lake with no need for any roads, meeting and visiting with all the new faces....pfffft...gone ! So, I'm extremely glad that things went without a hitch but I feel left out of the fun, and frankly a feeling of sadness. I apologize to all of you for not being there as I have a substantial plowing business that just had to be attended to. Everyone was snowed in and I just had to go. There have been so many nice things said though and I deeply thank all of you for all of the kind words. It is very humbling and very motivating at the same time. I hope I can be chosen again next year but realize that maybe another lake in the metro could get the nod, we shall see. In the meantime, you all know where I'll be nearly 100% of the time so I'll see you at the lake. Thank you Rick and Dennis and all the pro-staff guys, talk about 1st class !!

Joe Harty

ps. Paul....you are a hoot !! grin.gif

Joe,

Had I only known that you were going to drop by in the middle of the night. I'd have had a rattle reel set up for you too smile.gif

I couldn't agree more with what these guys are saying. If you get over in that area, stop in and say hi to Joe. First class operation, first class guy.

Thanks Dennis for listing our Sponsors again. I can't say enough thanks to these guys. They are the ones that make these events possible and are very much appreciated by all of us here at FM.

Thanks Guys! Each and everyone of you are greatly appreciated.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
