Hello everybody!

I'll be there! The Winni event was a blast and I'm sure Medicine will be also.

Are there any 'pout in Medicine?? I'm changing my tactics because largest 'pout seams to be winning these things. grin.gif

Matt- You might have to show me where to find a toothy critter like that on Medicine. That one looks about 34-35". Nice!

Chris,

We'll try and get you on some pike. The average size out there is incredible and they sure put up a fight on a rod and reel! No pout in Medicine, but there are some pike that would put most pout to shame smile.gif

Good Fishin,

Matt Johnson

HoleHopper,

Sounds good. Looking forward to seeing you again! The perch in Medicine Lake are quite a bit lower in numbers then in Winni, but there are still some nice size fish if you can find them. Maybe Hanson will have a repeat? smile.gif

Matt Johnson

I'm not so sure about a repeat. I'll give it a shot but I think if I was a gambling man, Medicine Man might have the best shot. I believe there has been a lot of prefishing going on for this one. If I ever had a free weekend, I'd be out there.

Holehopper-

Glad to have you on deck. Now if we can just assign a security guard to watch your truck keys! grin.gifgrin.gif I'd be more than happy to let you follow me but I'm pretty much going at this one blind.

The fishkid and I will be making an appearence also. NO EELPOUT! confused.gif I guess we'll be spreading out the flags for some pike. We did fish a tournament there about 5 years ago and a BIG dogfish came through the ice and won it for someone. Looking forward to seeing everyone again. There also were many small crappies caught that day.

I have a thiery about them pike. How is the shallow bite for them? less than 10 ft.? Can you blame me? Just trying to get some inside info! LOL

Matt, maybe this time I will have a chance to pick the brain of a fishing guru. It will be nice to see every one again! Hanson: "Ouch"! grin.gifgrin.gif

Oh yah, Ron and Hanson, I forgot to ask how you targeted those pout? How did you get em? Or is it a secret? I tryed to put a dead sucker on the bottom to no evail confused.gif My son did catch a small pike that way though. In 30 ft. Allready working on next year! grin.gif

I caught my pout on top of a hump in 26ft of water using a live sucker minnow and tip-up. 33+ feet of water around the hump. We had 4 other flags go off on top of the hump but didnt catch anything else on the tip-ups. Lots of spinning though. We marked many fish but they were reluctant to bite. We tried jigging spoons, waxies, minnows, minnow heads, minnow tails and small jigs as small as trout size jigs. Good Luck!

Very nice pike Matt! How deep of water were you fishing in and did you mark any weeds?

I'm hopefully going to fish it on Monday the 17th if it warms up a little by then.

I caught those pike in less than 10 feet of water (HoleHopper is on to something smirk.gif) and there were not a lot of weeds, basically just a bland, featureless flat. I rip jigged a Flasher Spoon tipped with a minnow head. If a fish showed up on the flasher it would hit, not too many sniffers. The pike are actually all over the lake, deep and shallow, but I think the bigger ones are still relating to shallower areas though. I plan on targeting pike the day of the event for a little while and pannies for the other portion of the day.

Good Fishin,

Matt Johnson

The best advice I can honestly give you would to be to stop in and talk with Joe Harty at Harty's Bait on the Southeast end. Joe knows the lake extremely well and he is a top-notch guy. Joe can give you a pretty good idea of where the fish are and what the latest scoop is on hot tips and techniques for out on Medicine.

Medicine Lake has a lot of good spots to fish in the winter. The holes are nice for panfish and the flats and humps produce a lot of pike. Some of the humps are also panfish hot spots too.

Good Fishin,

Matt Johnson

Hey guys...Less than a week away for this event.

I talked with Joe Harty and he said he would be open around 6 or 6:30 to make sure every one gets some bait.

We are expecting a good crowd for this event. Weather should be nice and the fishing good!

Here is a Yahoo map if anyone needs directions.

I'm in. Have never been on Medicine before. Have been pretty happy with the action close to home and haven't explored many lakes during the hardwater season. Still gotta find a friend with a portable to join me. Otherwise, I may just cut a hole or two in the floorboards of my Honda.

See y'all on Saturday.

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
