Planning a trip with some guys to LOW & plan to fish Red for the first time as well a bit.. when would be better to go for the best fishing? Last weekend in Jan or early-mid March? Thanks for any info...

also, is it best to go portable or out of a resort house?

Camoman, well late jan is good fishing. So is march. If the weather is cold and windy I would want to be in a hard house. If the weather is warm I would rather be in a portable for mobility. So theres no magic answer here. I would go with a rental house to base out of and bring portables to scout for fish "if" the weather is decent.

Good Luck!

A lot of the people use my sleepers as a base and fish out of their portables. I think that URL fish often bite far better in a portable or standing outside in the open then they do under a hard house. The most extreme time was 5 people taking turns one at a time in 1 portable 30 feet from the hard house while the other 4 would fish in the hard house. They were limited before the sun went down. The 4 people fishing in the hard house caught a total of 3 crappies, all of the rest came from the portable. The next day we moved the hard house the 30 feet to where the portable had been. New group but the same story except that then the crappies not only bit another 30 feet from the hard house but also where the hard house had been! Very few under the hard house. "Lowe" was with 3 years ago when we moved my old "white house" 10 feet to where they were biting. Then we sat in the house and watched out the windows as the people fishing 10 feet away where the house had been nailed them while we caught almost nothing under the house. Fishing with my Grandpa way too many years ago, wink.gif he would only come into the hard house to warm his fingers or check on me. He always fished out in the open 20 to 40 feet away from the hard house

If you are willing to go a little further into Canada, I would recommend Hollinshead Resort, a few hours north of Thunder Bay.  The resort is the only one on the lake, and in June offers excellent Walleye Fishing, as well as some dandy Northern Pike.  It's somewhere you can drive to as well.

Caught 20-23 gills and 6 crappies. Fun day on the 10 inches of ice. The whole lake was close to the same where I cut all the holes out and around

I’m still seeing very random thicknesses all over.  In the past few days I’ve been from St. Cloud to Winnie and have seen vehicles on the ice and open water on the same lake. I’m in Little Falls.  Tonight I checked 2 lakes NW of town.  Both had people fishing.  One looked to be safe for wheeler travel and the other, very near it, still had an open lead and you could see the difference between the first sheet of ice and the second. I hope it doesn’t get covered with snow anytime soon so we can still tell where the changes are. Be safe. Bring floatation and picks.  And don’t drive yet! Ruh ro....

I was on a small north metro lake today and found between 2.5 and 4 inches. One of the spud bar holes I punched started spewing water up so definitely needs a little more time.

I was out on Round Lake last night (12/9/17) for the first time of the year. I was very surprised to see 12 inches of ice. I checked a few other holes and found anywhere from 11-12 inches. Keep in mind, I was about 300 yds out from the southeast shoreline. I’m not sure if it’s consistent across the middle of the lake. I only saw one group with a snowmobile. All other groups walked out, at least where was.  Anyone have any reports for ice thickness on other lakes in the area?

Alot of open water pockets on bigger lakes still, some people out on cannon on 3 inches about 60 yards or less from shore.

Called baitshop, he said people are going out from beach and a couple houses out. Wouldn't say how much ice. Who's got an ice depth?
