Ice Update for the Big Pond?

Grabs

Recommended Posts

Let's use this to keep current on the ice conditions on Mille Lacs. I know there is one in the ice fishing forum, but lets focus this one a bit more to Mille Lacs.

So who has an update, I didn't get one from Lundeen's yesterday, but I have to imagine the bays being pretty iced over this morning.

Lets hear some good news boys, I wanna put my house out in 12 days!

Out last night. Some ice "forming" around the access area north of the casino. Not too much though. We are going to have a couple more weeks of boat fishing still, I hope.

Aphid, Was the access still ok to use at Indian point? Looking to go up on Sat if the ice isn't too bad.

The ice wasn't too bad and you should be able to get in. You might just need to go through some shards to get through, no big deal though. I am planning on going on Sunday if the weather holds up.

Hey Grabs,
Andy with two OO's and I probably aren't going to be able to do the ice series this winter (if we want to do the summer league) but lets set up a weekend on the big pond to fish for the big ones...

Send me an email if you're interested.

I launched at the access north of the casino last night. There was a little bit of ice built up on the shore but nothing major. Launching was not problem and the little bay had only a little bit of ice in it. The main lake had some ice forming around the reeds but very thin. We saw a couple of chucks of ice floating in the main lake. Still have some time to go out and fish.

AWH,
I would think that it would be open and ready to use. The access north of the casino, with the little area that opens to the big lake, was completely open. I would assume the one by Garrison would be the same.

Was out last night. What a beautiful full moon. Caught a few nice fish. There was no ice in the Shabosh Kung access, but there was ice forming in the bay just to the North of the access and a few floating icebergs. Most were blown out by the west wind yesterday.

Another (less popular...!) forum. The guy lives on a lake and had a pic of the lake from his house. Ice as far as you can see....(Don't want to put the unauthorized link here). Won't be long now!

Thanks,
My brother and myself had some stupid ideas of maybe going fishing tonight in the boat, Won't be doing that.
Thanks,

was up there today, went out on cove bay only got about 200-300 yds out from the launch and came up to some really thin ice-2" or so. It was only about 6 feet of water so I guess we'll have to wait a couple more days. But yes it is TRUE the pond is completely locked up tight ( just NO wind and we'll be OK) ann lake on 47 has 4-6" on most of it caught a couple sunnies and that was it.

Sent you one too Grabs.

The guy took the pic from his house on the east side of the lake (near Lakeside).

Looks legit!

Sorry to say that when I came home from work this morning there were HUGE open areas in both Wigwam and St. Albans Bays. It did look locked up on Tues. morning. Where did all the liquid stuff come from?

Wind? Did someone say "hope for no wind"? I think we're outta luck as I heard today's forecast (in the MSP area anyway) is for 25-45mph winds with temps in the upper 30's and 40's. So much for the ice...

As of Wednesday, Cove Bay had 4-6 inches according to Bill from Lundeens. With the wind expected today I don't know what will happen to the ice.

More bad news for an ice report...my mom just drove by the lake this afternoon on 169 and saw nothing but waves!! So much for this weekend and maybe even the next. Keep our fingers crossed I guess. I guess that just means I'll have one more weekend of goose hunting. Keep the ice reports coming though. I want to be up there as early as possible. Thanks. Hope to see some of you on the hard water.

Was up to the lake this morning on the east side by Agate Bay and things looked pretty decent. There was ice way out. Coming in from the east on HWY 18 was a different story though, could see a huge heave about 3/4mi. out just south of big point, couldn't see on the other side but I would think there would be some water. Thats the only part of the lake I saw.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
