Thanks eyeguy for looking in to that gate deal. I totally forgot they closed that park down. My bad. Anyway hope to see you all there around 7 then. I will bring a grill, some burgers, condiments etc, and a couple of frothy beverages... And of course the data sheet(s)

Have fun this weekend guys! I wish I was gonna be there (to show you all how it's done, LOL - j/k grin.gif). I'm headed to the Elk River stretch tomorrow with Tinman & possibly River Rat.

Be sure to post some of those hawg pictures after the event.

Anyone up for the same sort of FM informal get together/tourney in Monti on Aug. 28th? See the Monti FM gathering post for details

If anyone wants to put in earlier they can on the west side of the river below Cathedral High School. There is a landing but not the greatest. Then you could have your partner bring the vehicle over to Wilson later in the day.
I don't konw if I will be able to participate but hope that I can stop by and see the results.

Well folks, you missed out. The fishing great the company better, the thrill ride through Sauk Rapids area was heart stopping....to say the least. We all made it through in one piece though.
In the end, Team River Amateur had the magnet trophy for the day with a total of 90.25 inches (19, 18.25, 18 and two 17.5 inch smallies). Team Eyeguy/Fonz had a total of 82.5 inches. (17.25, 17, 16.75, 16.5 and a 15 inch smallie). The cook out was great, the conversation better and certainly awesome to meet other FMers and their families.

Photos of Team River Amateur's top four. The "gang".

WOW! Awesome photos guys! Congrats to Team River Amatuer! That is a VERY impressive for any team, any time! Man, now you are really making me wish I could have been there yesterday. Plus the weather was AMAZING this weekend! Was there any presentation/lure that worked best? I understand if you don't want to disclose...but I had to ask wink.gif

I hope we have similar results for the Monti get together on August 28th! I did get out on the Elk River section with 4 other FM'er for a little precursor to Monti smile.gif. We had a great time and I learned a whole new section of the river! Lots of smaller fish but I ended up with three 14-15inchers and one nice 17.5incher all on topwater. I am trying to get a couple of the pics posted on the "Elk River this Saturday" post.

Again, congrats to everyone that made it up to Sartel. I'm bummed - and JEALOUS - meeting and hanging out with other guys that share the same passion for fishing is a ton of fun - even more fun when the fish cooperate, and it looks like they did!

Only 2 teams stood by their word.... frown.gif

What was the hot bait?
One word..........Senkos.

Ebass,
My fish was actually smaller then the 3 Eric is holding. I have to teach him the way of photos I guess.... wink.gif
Erics were 19, 18.25 and 18.
Mine was 17 or 17.5 only.....

Boy, I wish we could have had numbers like this a few weeks ago for the Rivers Edge tourney. Our top 5 were 16 lbs 10 oz.

Really? Hmm, the one you are holding looks like a football.

Well I suppose I should post my results (more lack there of). On Sat Rob and I went to Upper Croix. Above Taylors Falls. Any ways, I couldn't hook a smallie if my life depended on it. I got a rock bass and a wee pike. Rob on the other hand (Mr first cast as I controlled the drift) got 5 smallies, 1 17 and 1 17.5 and two eater walters and 3 wee pike. I had a couple fish on but couldn't keep them on. Days are flying now. I gotta get out there early for the whole day just to up my odds.

I did hit up Grays bay last night with the woman. I got 5 small bass and the lady was blanked. She was making fun of me for skipping docks (They're looking out the window at us) until I caught one, then another, then back to back. I've got skillz, but no smallie magnet this year - cripes!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
