Mississippi river in Dayton

Been a few years since I have made it out on the crow also. I have made a couple trips from Dayton up to the mill. It was pretty smoth going for me. We had my roommates girlfriends boat. Banged the boat up pretty bad on one trip back down river. Hit those rapids just up the crow from the landing.
Those rapids seemed to be the worst spot I remember. The rest of the way up was not any shallower than the miss. up there. There is lots of good looking water up that way also. I think we saw one other boat on all the trips we took.

That is why I bought the aerator insulated bait bucket that runs 80 hours on 2 d cell batteries. Throw your bait in the trunk when you go to work.

Has anyone fished the mississippi park in champlin? The one right off 169 as it turns left into chapmlin. I am itching to do some fishing from shore, and I think I'm going to try it tonight.
Any info would be great.

Thanks

Ole

Mistermom, that is way too cool. You can cruise the rivers in stealth mode. By the time the fish know you are coming they will already have a hook in the mouth.

MM - Nice purchase! So this is like a fiberglass shallow rig of some sort? I'm curious to see it. Gomma hang a trolling motor on it, or push-pole everywhere? I told the boy he doesn't get in a boat on the river until he can swim, and even then not until after I learn the lay of whatever stretch we're on.

I suppose spending time on the forums when I'm unable to get out and fish is a bit like jousting windmills. grin.gif

It should be a great river "boat"; but I haven't bought it yet. Grumman used to make them and kinda still do (Marathon makes them now and they are somehow affiliated with grumman). The one I'm getting is a used one old style grumman aluminum. Its wider and flatter than a square-stern and has a little more depth and weighs around 100 lbs. Rated for a 6 horse and about 15' long and 45" wide.
Its not a Riverpro but it will do.

Pelican International sells what used to be the Coleman Scanoe - same sort of thing -square stern, wide, 5hp max, light weight. I think they cost about $550 - they've got them at Sportmart. Seems like a pretty slick small river boat to me. Cabela's has a 5hp 4stroke motor from Briggs and Strat for a little over $500 too. I'm thinking that would be a pretty good combo!

What's the Gruman cost?

The new marathon version around 1500-2000 I think. Its been a while since I priced them. I'm buying a used one from my bro-in-law if I can get him to part with it.

Yezz it eeez!!! Time to start packin' a rod to work! I'm gonna stop at Bernings tomorrow on the way home just to recon it before the water gets high. I saw a piece of precast hollowcore plank dumped there that looks like prime habitat, if the water gets over it.

Hey Aquaman the Don Quixoti of carp fishing!
You and Erik (little and W) might be interested in the fact that I am looking at purchasing a grumman sport boat. Its a cross between a boat and a canooe and should be a nice ride on the Crow. Hoping to get it in a week or two. Later.

Checked out Bernings last night - holy ghost! The ice is still on and dammed up heavily upstream, and I was staggered by the amount of concrete chunks that have been dumped there! Even if I did manage to sucessfully work a cast thorugh that mess, the poor fish would be dragged and slammed up a mini-canyon of concrete! Good release not likely! Hmmm - a canoe or small boat like say....MM's could launch upriver at the park, and anchor out and up from the concrete piles and work what must be great structure under there. Hmmmm - just a thought.

Some of that concrete is new (10 years or less). I'd hate to be the guys who do an "Adopt-a-river" on that one.

Man, I bet fishing at that dam was great! Where should a guy work that location now? Is the 3 rivers park shore any good?

I don't fish by the mill much anymore. In the summer I work at Fox Hollow golf course and we do some fishing down there after work but the last year we have been fishing the Miss by Dayton alot more. Found a few great holes full of smallies and eyes shocked.gif

Well I guess that is news to me. Where are you from/live? I have lived in St. Michael my whole life and my family has been friends with the Bernings since the town was first settled into. I guess I could be wrong but I know I haven't seen any new cement dumped there since the dam was taken out.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
