Bemidji Mystery July 24-25

Recommended Posts

Here are the teams that are signed up for the Bemidji event so far. I think Bemduckboy signed up too? Dennis can update on who has sent in their application and entry fees.

If anyone is interested in this event, please visit http://www.fishingsavvy.com for the application and mail the application and $75 team entry fee to Dennis Steele.

The lakes that are on the list will not be published and pre-fishing will not be allowed. We will draw the lakes just prior to each event. This will be a true mystery and should be a lot of fun!!

Who wants to test their finest fishing skills?? grin.gif

Hey Chuck,

Glad to see that the lakes will NOT be published.

How about printing out lake maps of the lakes that will be in the hat, 1 for each team and then have them at the ready once the lake is chosen for distribution.

Also,
I propose that we all meet at the Cenex truckstop to do the lake draw the morning of at like 8 am. That way we could get some breakfast and then have time to head out, get bait or whatever. It is also right on the intersection of 2 and 71...easy access to all main roads out of town and right by Bluewater Bait. We could even reserve their meeting room for our group. If this will work, let me know and I'll reserve it for us.

This might work best since not everyone will be staying at Ethans.

I agree that meeting there would be a great idea as getting in an out at Ethan's could be tricky with that many boats & trucks in the morning. And a good breakfast before we head out is an awesome idea!

I was trying to brain storm a meeting place, so great idea, Tom. Let's all meet for breakfast at Cenex, and there's also Pete's Place across the road too if we fill the place smile.gif

We will draw the lake there and head out. Plan on meeting at Cenex (junction Hwy 2 and Hwy 71) at 8am sharp!
I'm tentatively planning on eating breakfast around 7am, drawing the lake at 8:00am to give all teams enough time to get bait and drive to the lake.

I will take care of the maps for the lakes.

I'll reserve the room tonight. If it is already taken, there still should be enough room for all. If not, we could do the drawing in the lot.

Let Mark know he'll have a mad rush at 8:10!!...LOL

No go on the room...booked all day.

We'll just need to split up and then meet in the lot at 8?

Between Petes Place and Cenex, there should be plenty of tables for breakfast. There's plenty of room in cenex's lot for us to meet in.

Any update on attendance?

I may know someone that is looking for a partner. With or without a boat I think something could be worked out.

If you are looking for some one to fish with post it here!

So is that scoring system as confusing as it looks or what.

Basically if you tie into a Muskie your a winner, hmmm...

Hi Chad,
We are meeting at Cenex just south of Bemidji on Hwy 71. We don't necessarily need a meeting room as we will draw a lake in the parking lot. Teams will likely head up the road to Bluewater bait and get last minute bait/tackle there. They are offering us a 15% discount on bait and tackle.

The scoring is quite easy. Total pounds of fish determines the winners. Muskies are the exception at 25 points for a legal fish because we immediately catch and release with another team's on the water verification. We cannot weigh each muskie.

No, a muskie does not guarantee a win. Look at the Cass Lake results. smile.gif

Who are you teaming up with?

Actually the scoring is as simple as it gets.

1pt per pound of fish and you can weigh one persons daily limit each day, best two day total wins.

Each species does have minimum length requirements.

Chuck you must have been typing at the same time I was! Nice work.

Glad to se quite a few fishing this event.

Just curious as to how many folks plan to camp at my place?

Hey Chuck - why don't you let me know all the lakes that are in the mix and I will take the liberty of printing out maps for everyone?!? grin.gifgrin.gif

We'll be in the area Friday afternoon/evening. Planning to do some smallie fishing on our way up from the Cities. Thinking about hitting Mille Lacs but if the wind is bad we may turn to that spot you mentioned Tom or then head up to Spider.

Hey Tom and Doug, if you guys see this shoot me an e-mail with some info on the two smallie spots we talked over dinner at Ron's place.

Dennis just got Bemduckboy's entry form so that's another team. Those two are pretty good fishermen, look out for those two, or should I say, just follow them around...LOL grin.gif

Grabs, email on its way.

Oh yea, Ethan, we'll be there too.

Tom, you know I couldn't catch a dead fish in a short barrel with no water in it besides nobody will see us as my boat is camo - duh!!

I'm looking forward to putting faces to names as well as getting a whole weekend to fish.

Ethan,
I'm trying to respond to your email from last night but it keeps bouncing back to me as undeliverable. Can you send me another and confirm your return address?

Sorry I can't make the mystery event. I really wanted to, but my email explains why.

Thanks.

Hey Bob O - I got one from ya.

To those camping at my place this weekend - I have not reserved a porta John for the 3 teams that plan to stay, so I am just going to have our basement open at all times and you guys can use the house whenever you need to. This way it saves everyone a little money. If you guys prefer otherwise, let me know and I should still be able to get one for the event.

See everyone this weekend!!

That's fine Ethan, with only 3 teams camping there it shouldn't be a big deal. Plus there are plenty of woods around too.

I have been asked to address something regarding this event. I thought we talked about this at the last event...

Even though the lake list will not be published and there is NO prefishing on any of the possible lakes (which you will have to use your best judgement), FYI, I had to excuse the minimum 900 acre rule for this mystery.

This is going to be a lot of fun!! Hopefully this mystery will be our most interesting and fun tournament yet!

We will draw the lake Saturday morning at 8 a.m. at Cenex as explained above. Then begin the event at 10 a.m.

Sunday we will draw the lake at 6am and hopefully we will all be on the water before 7am.

4 hour breaks WILL be in effect on this tournament.

Chuck - I assume you are referring to no prefishing on the am of tourney correct. I was planning on going fishing the next 2 days but am curious as to what you meant by the post and there is nothing about prefishing in the rules. If you are not referring to the am of the tourney please email me and we can discuss it there. [email protected]

No pre-fishing means no pre-fishing. That means a day, a week, 2 weeks B4, etc...You cannot fish or be on the lakes for the sole purpose to learn them for this event. That's why it's a mystery.

If you were going to fish both days to prepare, I would strongly suggest not doing so. grin.gif

Playing Devil's advocate.....
So what are the people who live up there to do? Just fish Bemidji, Cass, Irving, Andrusia, Wolf and Marquette?

Chuck, maybe, and I don't know if this is a good idea, but maybe you should list the potential lakes just so the locals can go out and fish and not worry about it if they may be violating the pre-fish rules.

At this stage in the game I don't know if it would hurt to know the "list".

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
