FM gathering in Crookston roll call....

Recommended Posts

I am looking for feedback for an FM gathering in Crookston this summer.. I am thinkging July 10th weekend. Fishing the Redlake river or Red River. Pending on water available in the rivers boats and shore fishing will be a great adventure..

If the river is anything like last year we should have a great place to have a gathering below the dam.

Crookston has a great park for camping along the river and several hotels and motels.. for preferred rates just tell them Wiskers sent you.. The Northland Inn and AmericInn are your best deals.

looking for feedback and ideas for this event to get them city slickers out of the metro up to the boondocks.. lol lol.. Small boats and River Pro's welcome if we use the Red Lake River... I will keep posted on water levels... ...

Let me know your thoughts...

Bikini Volleyball, a lawn chair, a cold beverage in one hand and catching some kitties all at the same time? Hmmm, well Bro, you let me know when you secure the bikini Volleyball teams. I'll be up there either way.

I wonder who will catch the biggest sheep head during this event? or the most sheep head for that matter. It's too bad it's still March. 3 months to go. That's going to be a long wait.

Well Whiskers. You will just have to make it down for the Carver Gathering this year.I haven't set up the dates yet but its comming none the less.It would be fun to have it in May when the kitties get rolling, but it seems I have May almost booked solid.I asume that most folks do too.So much great fishing in May.

It sounds like a deal Dennis.. Flashman is always looking for a reason to get me down there.

If its a boat and it floats... fish on..

This is starting to sound like an awesome weekend... lets just hope the fish gods are with us and the weather cooperates.

Well Wiskers,
This might be one that I have to attend also. Was born and raised in Crookston and I have never ever fished the river. Spent all my time out on Maple, Union, or Sarah. My brother fishes the river quite a bit and I think you might know who he is. Anyway, I'm transplanted down into the cities now but still make it up there quite a bit, both summer & winter. Since its still a ways away, we'll have to see how the timing works out. We could probably dump our 14' Lund w/ the 9.9 Johnson into the river too. Its not a RP but you can fish out of it wink.gif

I definately want to make it up there more this year, I'll have to see how catfish league turns out. There's just so many places to fish and so little time.

I think I'm supposed to have a fishing league the 9th of July...I guess I'll have to skip that one. I hope we end up with decent weather, I guess I've fished in the rain before so I could do it again. Anyway I can hardly wait... I'm thinking I may need to do some prefishing prior to the event.

Ok here goes..

I have a buddy that is a DJ and the Northland Inn will let me use the main banquet room for a bash on Friday night the 9th, and if we get enough fellas that are staying at the Inn she will also give us the hospitaltity room for Sat. night with a bar.

So the big Q. is if enough FMers are going to make it up here I will set it up so we can get great rates for rooms at the Northland Inn, with Restraunt, bar and pool..Dance Fri night and some good beverages then we can fish Sat.

With or with out boats this will be a great weekend of fishing....

I need to get an idea on how many fellas are going to be here for sure on Fri.. Heck we can fish Fri and Sat.. Just let me know what you all think.

Rick>>>>>>>>>>

Let me know if we can get some items like we did on the Shue this winter..I will work on some local stuff also.

Got fingers crossed for good weather that day..

PASS THE WORD............................

Awesome.. The river just went up 2 feet since yesterday with the rain.. so with any hope that we keep getting rain this summer we can still use the river with boats in July..

I really need to know who is all going to be here for sure as soon as you can tell me so I can make plans... IF your going to be here say so for sure in here and I will take note..

Thanks and see you all on the water..

2 days and counting. I've got the rods ready, although I'll probably take them down to the MN river tonight to see if I can't get a big flatty tonight. Can't wait to get up there.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
