Well people,
Just got a call from Forestville State PArk. They just informed me that I have to get an event insurance policy in order for them to issue me an event permit.

No such thing last year??????????

So if you come, just take care and don't hook yourself or others or fall in. I guess that is a possibility. I guess I assumed that most who planned on attending wouldn't place blame on me or the park. Always one I suppose.
Now we get to see just how much more I sink into this!!

Make a point to come down to Minnesota's Coulee country. Participate in one of the awesome displays of nature that Trout Day can afford you.

If you've never experienced this setting, you owe yourself and your family or group the opportunity to truly discover one of Minnesota's natural displays.

Mark April 27, 2002 on your calendar and come on down. It's easy to find and your whole family will thank you. Yes, the gals will absolutley love it!!!!

A little inforamtion that I think is important to share with all of you!

I haven't specified to the public who the guides are that have donated guided fishing trips for donations at this years Trout Day.

All of you have at one point or another, read valuable fishing and outdoor information from them! Yes, they are (except for a couple) all "brothers" of fishingminesota.com. So, nows your chance to win a trip, possible fishing with one of your favorite "Forum Guide Pros".

These are not listed in any particular order.

Gullguide - Cuyuna Mine pits
Guideman - Beautiful Lake Vermilion
Firstchoiceguide
D-man - Mille Lacs
ANd:
yours truly SE MN Trout or smallmouth

Our good buddy former fishingminnesota.com forumguidepro Turk, has again donated a guided trip on the St. Croix as well!

Let's not forget other gracious sponsors we all know!

SCENIC TACKLE
The Drake Motel
Mel Dickie (custom rods)
Gander Mountain.

Door prizes are my way of thanking everyone that shows interest and concern for one of our precious resources, SE MN streams and rivers!!!

See you there!

If I left anyone out from fm.com I apologize!

Keep the rods bendin'!!!

If the directions are a little confusing, Trout day is not in Kansas!LOL

I'll give a couple routes for ya.

From the NOrth:

1.

Take Hwy 63 South through Spring Valley, Mn.
This turns into Hwy 16. Follow 16 East to COunty 5(about 6 miles from Spring Valley). Turn SOuth on 5, follow the PArk signs from there(it's another 5 miles or so).

2.

Highway 52 south will work as well. Follow that to Highway 16. Turn onto 16, going West. From there, same as first directions.

3. From the South, just flip flop #1 and #2. So if your coming up on Hwy 52, you'll turn West on 16 as well. If your coming up on 63, you'll be turning East on 16!

If I have you completely confused call or e-mail me!!

What a great day you put together Jim W!!!

Great info, the kids really enjoyed it.

It was obvious that Jim put a lot of effort into this event. Even though the weather was lousy, the turnout was around 40 people.

For those of you who missed it, you owe it to yourself to get to next years Trout Day.

Great Day Jim and Thank you so much for such a great time.

Rick,
I would have to agree Jim did a great job and put alot of effort into trout day. I had a good time, it was nice to see some of the faces from the forums and talk to everybody. Would have been nice to see some better weather though, but that was beyond anybodys control. See you all next year!

Yes it was a little work, but it is and will always be worth it in my opinion!

There were exactly 40 registered for this years Trout Day. Hats off, to those who came! It was indeed a miserable day, weather wise!

It is amazing how holding and running an event, then observing it, creates new ideas for the upcoming year!

For those of you who came, I would gladly listen to any ideas or suggestions for next year!

Thanks again for coming! (see other post for thanks)

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

MN DNR posted April 13 as Ice out date for Vermilion

👍. What was the water temp in Black Bay? Thanks....

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
    • smurfy
got mine done........for the cabin.....ready for summer festivities!!!!!!   there was still frost in the ground...........but good gawd are the lakes low!!!!!
    • CigarGuy
