Jim,
If I am not Spring Turkey hunting, I'll be there... My son who is serving our nation right now , will most likely not be able to attend this year. I'm sure he'll miss being there, as we had such a great time there last year!
Hope to see everyone there again, if I'm not chasing gobblers!

Hey all,
Teaching kids about all of the facets of fishing will be one of the key elements to this years Trout Day.
SO, if you are a troup leader, youth group leader etc. Bring your kids!!!
However, I will need to know soon(and in advance) so MinnAqua will have an idea how many children to work with! YEs, it's not until SPring, but you need to solidify some things in order for a successful event!!

Still working on other sponsors etc.

If there are any key subject matter or presentation stuff people would like to see at Trout Day next Spring let me know!

I will be providing new Trout Maps etc.

OK!

3 months people until the Second Annual Trout Day takes place.

Update: I have received word from a local flyfishing/spin fishing guide who will be on hand for additonal flyfishing information and is willing to donate some flies and maybe another guide trip.

ALso, I need more kids at Trout Day this year. MINN AQUA might not return next year if we don't see a large enough group of kids.
CUb scout troups, youth groups, large families, the neighbors kids are all welcome!
PLease confirm with me when you plan on bringing kids. MInn Aqua has specific programs for varying group sizes!

I tell ya, with all of the guide trips and door prizes being offered, you would be a fool not to show up for Trout Day!

This year will be a little different. People won't be able to just show up in the morning, sign up for door prizes, then return for the drawing( ie. Dark and Fishhead, lol)!

PLan on BBQing, hopefully somefresh trout that Sarge, Dark and Fishhead catch in the morning for me!

Check back for further details!

Jim W

PS. I can always use an extra hand as well!

Dark,

Fishing ofcourse!! I just don't want to ask a bunch of people to take time presenting with no one around to listen or participate.

I plan on having the majority of seminars, demos and presentations mid-day. "Generally" the fishing slows a little during this time of day. SO having a good show of hands for those who are donating their time and expertise is only out of respect.

I'm willing to hear any and all suggestions!!

Dark,

I wouldn't be too concerned about my efforts, more for those who are volunteering their time to come. Thanks though!

Lunch has been a little bit of a trouble. I'm not sure if I could legally get away with serving food, but will look into it. Otherwise, we could start taking names for food donations and chili cooks as yourself!!!

Spread the word!!!

Think browner!!

Apparently, the Forestville Parks Manager realized last years First Trout Day was a success. Because now they are asking me to acquire a permit for this years event, including some strict guidelines and rules!

One is, they would like to know a round about figure of how many will be attending.
So please, if you think you can make it let me know, make reservations at the park to camp or post it here!

ALso, I need youth groups and kids to attend as well or else I will have to pull the plug on MINN AQUA's program.

Specific timeframes for the day have yet to be nailed down. LAtest update is, I will be providing a seminar on Spin fishing Small Stream/River trout fishing. Included if time permits, a segment on smallmouth fishing in SE MN streams and rivers as well.

COme one come all to this Free event, kicking off a new open water season!

Gullguide! Yup, I don't have a copy of the letter in front of me, but I believe it is just a formality.
Plus there cannot be any commercializing. Last year I let someone bring a few Red barn rods to show, but they were really trying to sell them. SO maybe that's what happened?

I think for liability reasons they want to know specifically what is going on during Trout Day.

"Come to Trout day! The only trout fisherman gladiator competition in the state"!!!LOL!!!!!

Come on down for this, if only to meet some fellow FM er's. Bring your significant others along to, Forestville is a beautiful park, and if they don't like fishing, there are maintained walking/hiking trails to explore, and the flora should be in full swing(maybe even some morels popping up depending on the weather).

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!
    • PSU
How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
