Doe Hunters??????

I am curious to know how many of us are out there hunting does? Dont get me wrong I will take a nice buck if I see one, but every season I am counting on getting a doe. It is not a management thing for me, its just what I have come to enjoy more than keeping my hopes up for a nice wallhanger. Lets hear some other thoughts on this.

Yeah, I'd love to be able to take a wack at a wall hanger but most of the time I have to take what the good lords giving and for me thats normally a doe. Doesn't bother me one bit either, just means I'm back in the cabin watching movies, playing cards or duck hunting sooner smile.gifHaven't shot a real buck in probably 10 ten years.

Well I've been mostly hunting does, in fact I was Tuesday night when I shot my 8 pointer. So needless to say I'm really shooting does now & I don't really care if they're very big, anything over a year-old is great by me.

I am hunting does, unless biggy rolls by, but I'm in high doe percentage areas for now. One thing to remember is not to bump all those does out of your area, they are your best friend when the rut arrives!

Had a big un with a double throat patch out at 30 yrds last night. Saw her last year, has got a fat gut and deep chest. Her fawns scented me last night and although broadside she was on edge and it was getting dark - I didn't even draw. But I've be scheming ever since on how to put her in the freezer! Am gonna buy a ground blind and try that. She has busted me the last two years so its getting personal now! Nothing wrong or dull about hunting does. Who wants to sit in a tree all year and not fling an arrow? I like to fling and zing 'em.

Boy I like to hear this out some bow hunters. I have been trying to defend slug hunters point of view that usually includes......in a two day season they all hope to shoot the 30 pointer, but if a doe comes by most enjoy shooting one and having some venison.

I'm glad you guys are honest, and I believe most share your opinions.

I'll shoot the first deer that comes by. We don't have "big bucks" in our area. They either get shot before they get old enough to sport a large rack or we don't have the genetics/nutrition in our area. If our group doesn't shoot does we don't get much meat. Our motto is "if it's brown, it's down".

I shoot as many does as possible every year. I do it for management purposes and because I love venison. I eat two deer a year and give the rest away to friends and family after I have processed it. I prefer 1.5 year old does, great tasting.

I don't know why all the guys that are standing around the registration station, comparing deer, bragging up the big bucks, and they say,"Oh, you got a doe."

I shoot em. I eat em. Sure, if Mr. big comes along he's dead meat. But to be totally honest the does just plain taste better and I think are way more tender.

My family eats a lot of venison. (If we're lucky ) Don't bother me in the least bit to shoot a doe.

Likewise. I'll take a buck if it walks by, but my objective for being in the woods is putting meat in the freezer. I love venison and eat it often. Good to see others thinking the same way.

jlm echoed my thoughs perfectly. My buck is in someone else's freezer right now. I'll eat some young ones.

Personally, I will shoot a doe any day. I don't have much time to hunt anyways. I have twin boys so, all my time is spent raising them. So, if a doe walks by me on opening day well, I will shoot it. Then I have more time to spend with my family.

I'm with jlm and bigbucks. Nothing better than a 1.5 year old doe for the freezer. We usually go through 3 a year. My 6 year old boy loves those venny hotdogs. I think he eats most of it over the course of the year. Might have to take 4 this year so I can have some!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
