new hunting rifle

If you were going to buy a new hunting rifle and your choices were either an 25-06 or a 7mm remington mag. which way would you go?
to give a quick history, I already have a .300 H&H in the safe and am looking for something alittle more "whitetail" orientated (sp?). Might use it varmit hunting. I know both are flat shooters but am very very perplexed on which rifle to get. any opinions would be great.
Good fishing, OSOK

osak,

I've got a Rem. 7 mag. BDL, it's a very nice rifle and I've taken quite a few deer with it in MN but I've gone back to my Rem. .308. Reason being, most of the shots I take where I hunt are 150 yards or less and the bullet speed and impact of the 7 mag, can really tear up a whitetail. It's not a problem if you get it right behind the shoulder and through the ribs clean but I've caught the shoulder blade going into the deer a couple of times and it makes a pretty big hole.

If you're going to shoot varmints, like prairie dogs and you plan on putting quite a few rounds through it, a 7 mag. can also get pretty abusive to shoot.

Like the other guy said... the 25-06 would probably be the better choice of the two you listed, but I'd try and steer you to a 270 that uses the WSM's (Winchester short mags) enough power to hunt anything in this state and you can take a trip out west and take down what it has to offer as well! In the end you should go see a bunch of guns at your local gander/galyans/reeds or whomever sells them and pick the guys minds that are working the hunting area (as long as there not kids) and tell them what your hunting for, what area and they will help you out alot. I own a Browning 270 WSM A-Bolt rifle.... Very nice!

Having shot six boxes of shells through a Browning BAR 7mm mag before at prairie dogs (pre owning a 220 swift) I'd say it isn't a realistic thing to think of shooting at that kind of varmints. Nice and flat but WAY more then a person wants to shoot. I ended up selling it because the thing was so big and cumbersome for MN deer hunting and got a Browning BAR ligthweight 30-06 instead and love it. But I have on order a Winchester lightweight 25 WSSM and am just waiting to see what it shoots like. Having taken a whitetail last year at 420 yards with a 257 Roberts the 25's will reach out and touch things.

You should go with a 7mm short mag. Less recoil and a shorter action.

H & H Sport Shop in Maple Lake has a Browning A-Bolt 7wsm for $639.99.

Well folks, I ordered the rifle yesterday.
25-06 stainless/laminated stock.
Really looking forwards to deer season.
It was a tuff choice deciding which rifle to go with, so I made an "executive decision" ..........flip of a coin.
rifle should be here tues. or wes.
now I am debating over scopes, would love to go with one that has mil dots or simuliar but haven't quite figured that out.
Reeds is having a big sale Sat & Sun so a browsing I will go.
As far as WSM or USM??? I am going to wait till they have more time in the field have heard nasty rumors about bol failures and premature barrel wear with them so......
If anybody knows different and wants to explain please do, knowledge is good......
.......Thnx
DAVE

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
