Question for trappers

Question. I'm not a trapper, but am going to be doing some coyote hunting this winter. I am going to skin one out(if i get one) to have a coyote pelt on the deer camp wall. I know to scrape it etc, but what do you guys treat the hide with? Thanks

Best advice to you take it right to taxidermist. He will skin it leave feet and claws on it will look cooler. And it needs to be tanned at a tannery. You better know how to flesh it if you do it your way cause if you dont get all the fat of the pelt can't be tanned the hair will slip.

Good Luck...

Hey protrapper. Where are you from? I am assuming by your handle that you trap. I just started trapping this year and the animals are kicking my butt!! If you are close to me, was wondering if you would be willing to take a ride along for a day...need some serious help on this trapping thing. Please get back to me. Thanks.

Lunker, If you just want a deer camp wall hanger, there might be a cheaper way.
Carefully skin it out, right down to the toes and nose. Slit the tail to skin that too.
Scrape all the fat and flesh off the entire hide.
Stretch it out and tack it onto a board frame or plywood panel, flesh side out.
After it dries out hard, start working Neatsfoot oil into the flesh side, work it hard and keep putting it on until its worked through the hide to the hair side.
Had a friend who did this with a buffalo hide and it turned out okay, but it is a whole lot of work. You might want to experiment with a hide that you you don't mind losing before you try it on a good one. Good luck. The last time I skinned a coyote, I decided that I didn't want to do any more. He didn't give up his hide easily.

Frozentoes,

Would love to ride with, but your to far away!! Plus I a m a professional trapper. I really can't be away from my line in middle of season like this.

But I know another pro your way he lives in Lake City Minnesota and is a excellent trapper. 300 - 400 coon a year 100 plus mink 100 plus coyotes. Post on hear if you need some help and I will give you some advice.

Actually, I was looking for someone who I could ride with on their line. That way I could actually see proper sets, locations, and how and what type of baits and lures to use for coon and canines. I understand about different types of sets but would like to see somebody that has been trapping for awhile actually doing them. I learn better by seeing then reading. Coon trapping for me has been very frustrating. I have caught one this year as well as 1 possum and 1 rat. Might have to hang it up for coon now that it is going to be getting cold. Still have hopes of getting a fox line set out.
