Benelli Montefeltro or Baretta AL391 Urika

buzzsaw

Recommended Posts

I am planing on buying a 20 guage in the next few weeks for Grouse/Pheasant hunting mainly and am strongly considering the Benelli Montefeltro... I also like the Baretta Urika... I want a gun that is light, but also very nice. If anybody has any feedback/opinions that they would like to share feel free.

I would suggest what ever one fits you best. Either choice would be a great one. I have a beretta 390 and love it.

'Saw,

Yes indeed, it's all about what fits you best. Benelli, Beretta, Browning and a few Remington's . . . are all quality guns. I'd go by 1) fit , feel and sight, 2) weight 3) gun construction/components & ease of cleaning and 4) price.

Have fun choosing and get a few opinions/advice from different retailers.

Buzz,

I have a 390 and a 391. I have also owned a super black eagle. The 391 is the best one out of the bunch by far. It is light, and fast. The narrower forearm is great and gives you good feel. The thing I like best is I can shoot the lightest trap loads all the way to the heaviest steel 3" and it ejects them all without missing a beat. Hope this helps. As many have said it all comes down to what fits and what you like.

I own a Montefeltro myself in a 12 gauge and i love it. As far as i know the 20 gauge montefeltro is one of the lightest 20 gauge shotguns on the market. I'm not real picky about brand i shoot thru mine it cycles even the lightest 7/8 loads by Federal whereas a browning or any other gas operated shotgun won't so it becomes a single shot. I also have a Benelli Nova and a 870 but I use the montefeltro the most. I like it because its light, short ( 24 inch barrel ) and comes up just right for me and like i said before it ejects the lightest loads to the biggest 3 inches without missing a beat. Not sure what the price is the Montefeltro cuz mine was a gift. But as far as i know that Baretta owns Benelli so they are both nice guns. Just my 2 cents hope you find what you are looking for. Also if you know anyone who has one of these guns ask to try out. Dont hurt to ask. Good luck ! Brian

I appreciate all the feedback! It really is coming down to decision time.... I've changed my mind on the final two... it is either going to be the Montefeltro or the new Beretta Teknys Gold..it's in the AL391 line and is a dressed up version of the Urika I guess.

I find myself in the same situation as buzzsaw here - I really like the fit, feel/balance, and price of the 391 better than the Monte, but I love the Benelli inertia action - smooth and FAST!

Nailz (or any ther 391 owners) - I have a couple questions that I'd like to hear from Beretta owners on:
1) Any problems jamming up on light loads (7/8oz, 1oz) when shooting clays, etc.?
2) How bad is the cleaning on a 391 really...some people complain terribly, some not at all. The truth please? smile.gif

Thanks,
Blaze

I picked up a 391 last fall. I haven't had any troubles with jamming using 1 oz trap loads, it seems to cycle well and really throws them out. As to the cleaning, I think they are a bit of a pain compared to an 11-87 or 1100. Once you go through it a couple of times it isn't so bad but it is not as straight forward as an 1100. But, the gun handles well and I wouldn't trade it just because of the tougher cleaning.

I bought the Beretta AL391 Teknys Gold...It just seemed like the right choice for me. I agree with the last guy regarding the cleaning part of it... no big deal.

I have never had a problem with it not kicking a load. I reload and make some pretty light loads and they always kick out. I have never had any problem with it being dirty and jamming either. As far as cleaning I do the basic barrel, exterior and bolt cleaning, and then once a year I take it to my local gunsmith and let him take it completely down and clean it. It costs about $25 and takes care of any issues. I don't think I would have to do this, I think once you got used to it it would be pretty easy.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
