WELL I THINK THIS WEEKEND I'LL GO DOWN TO PRESTON ONE MORE TIME TO CLOSE UP CAMP. I WILL HAVE TO GET SOME CASTING IN THOUGH....MAYBE THE MAIN BRANCH EAST OF LANESBORO FOR SMALLIES, EYES, CATS, OR MAYBE A BONUS BROWN.
DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW THE WATER LOOKS AROUND LANESBORO AND DOWNSTREAM?
WET NETS!

Dark, can't really tell you about Lanesboro and down, but I can tell you that we got quite abit of rain down by Spring Valley on saturday. It clouded the water pretty bad, but they are already going down and will be fishable for the weekend if we don't get more rain. If the bigger water is unfishable think small.

Dark and Sarge,

Maybe we should hook up that evening(Saturday) to share how we all did! If Dark gets a "smart fire" going, I'd be glad to stop by and get smart for awhile.
I plan on wading Saturday and Rick might come down as well. Maybe we could convince him to "get smart" as well?

Let me know boys!!!

I fished the Middle Branch tonight and it was a bit dirty but very fishable. Should be in good shape by Saturday. Can't tell you much about the other branches, but I'm sure the S. Branch will be clean, especially towards Forrestville, while Lanesboro might still be too dirty. Gribben and Diamond usually clear quickly, but I can't say the same for Duschee.

The water temps on the Root have certainly plummeted with the cool nights.

Hey Dark,

I was down in Lanesboro on Monday, and the river was complete chocholate milk and up just a bit. Many of the smaller tribs (Duschee & Gribben) were unfishable as well. However, on the way back to town I stopped at trout run and it was running PERFECT... just that milky cloudiness to it (spinner heaven).

Oh, on another note... I was down on the NB or the root last night training the dog, and that is not looking very good for fishability either.

Good Luck fishing boys! I'm heading to North DAkota for 5 days of duck hunting fantasy world!!!

JA!

Sarge,
Your more than welcome to meet up with me(whomever) before/during/after. Lot's of water. However, since you have a lot of experience taking pictures of my fish that might be a good idea. I'll call ya Friday noght or early Saturday morning. I plan on getting out around 10:00 am and fish until dark.

Dark, The river in Preston is starting to clear. It has some color but not bad. I was over Parsley's last night and It was dirty but by weekend I'm sure it will be fishable. It was starting to get that greenish look to it. I haven't been on the northbranch for quite some time now so I really don't know how the fishing was, but with this cooler weather I would think thing would start HAPPENIN. JLK

Finally,
I get a chance to get out and fish.

I'll be there and hopefully work won't prevent me from getting over to the smart fire with Jim.

I'm really looking forward to this little trip.

Hey,
we can talk about next spring's Trout Day with Jim W.

The weather is going to definitely cooperate this weekend! Possibility of 75 on Saturday? Bring it on!!

Rick, if you didn't get my e-mail, let's plan on 10:00am instead! Same place, same bass channel! We will find fishable water, even if we have to drive around all of Fillmore County. Heck, that would be one way to find out all of my spots now wouldn't it!

Sarge, I'll be calling you for a last minute stream update. Dark, see ya around the fire!!!
Time to bends some rods boys!!!

GOING SOUTH ON HWY 52, GO THROUGH PRESTON TO THE RIVER BRIDGE AND TURN LEFT JUST PAST THE BRIDGE(DOWNSTREAM). ENTER HIDDEN VALLEY CAMPGROUND AND GO STRAIGHT IN (NOT UP THE HILL). RIGHT PAST THE AGE OLD TOILETS, CURVE LEFT TO SITE B-4. LOOK FOR THE BROWN AND GOLD TRAILER NEAR THE ROAD AND A DK. GREEN FORD W/TOPPER.
SOUNDS LIKE FUN...SEE YA THERE
WET NETS!

P.S. I'LL HAVE SOME HOT CHILI IN THE CROCK!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
