Pre-Season Trout report

Recommended Posts

Jim W

With the melt of the snow cover comes the rise of the streams and rivers. On sunday, Sarge and I checked a few spots out for some pre-season catch and release troutin'!
Unfortuntely, we could not find fishable waters. Let's hope that this snow melts quickly and things begin to dry! If you went out and found some fishable water, let us know how you did!

(Don't forget the 28th of April at Forestville State Park)

Dark30,

Head waters of Root River(Deer was one of them) system. Sorry that I can't be more specific. I'll provide more detailed info at the trout days.
jameswalleye, NOW.... unfortunately, I checked Deer and it wasn't quite ready. I have a feeling that things will be a little slow until no snow!(poet and didn't know it) Jim W

Hey Jim W i remember a couple months ago you told me about a time period when the big browns in Spring Valley Creek ran up into Deer Creek a bit. When does this usually happen? I have my afternoons off next week after 2:30 and am looking to do some fishing somewhere. I thought this might be something i could try.

I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH THE CAMPGROUND IN PRESTON AND HE SAYS THERES ALOT OF SNOW LEFT. HE MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO OPEN ON TIME FOR OPENING WEEKEND IF IT DOSN'T DRY OUT. THE RIVER IS HIGH AND DIRTY.
OH WELL.

dark30,

More of a reason to come down to Trout Day then. With it falling all most a month away, there should be plenty of fishing opportunity. Unless that is, we get a ton of rain.

As far as snow cover, it's spotty with a lot in the woods(shaded areas) and the fields are finally showing signs of clearing up. We can actually see the tops of last years corn!

I'LL BE HAPPY JUST TO GO THERE WITH SOME DRY WOOD AND SIT. IT WON'T BE A VERY "SMART FIRE" IF I'M ALONE. I'LL BE AT THE TROUT DAY EVENT EITHER WAY. THE ROOT DOSN'T STAY MESSY FOR LONG, NOT LIKE THE MINNESOTA.
EVERYONE ATTENDING THE TROUT DAY EVENT WILL NEED A STATE PARK STICKER ON THEIR VEHICEL WON'T THEY?

Yup, you will need a sticker. However for large events, the cost is half the regular fee for the first 10 vehicles. When discussing that with the Park Ranger, he said it would be too hard to tell if we would get 10 vehicles, leaving me stuck with the cost.
I am going to see if they will work out something for us. I would like to buy the 10 discounted parking passes or something like that, giving incentive for people like yourself to get there early. I'll keep everyone updated. Jim W

Thanks for the up dates, we were going to come up today to find a different spot to park but have to work. Weather is supposed to be good. Hope to get on the board too.

I don't know, not getting your mail delivered to your door is a very egregious situation.  He also has a great sense of history indicating he has vision.  Letting us know he erected his sign in 2008 provides a vivid example of his powers.  He sees the future well...he gonna be pissed at somethin!  A bit of a Nostradamus.

That’s pretty awesome! I’ve been keeping an eye out around the house but haven’t seen enough activity to coax me out in the temps we’ve been having.  We mainly have fox around the house, and only one good yote.  We had a young wolf do a lap around the house in the spring but haven’t seen him around since.  I know I couldn’t shoot him but I’d sit out just to see him if he started showing up again. Mainly turkey tracks as of late.

Probably two of the safest bets in the area. I haven’t fished Crooked off Bunker for several years but it always seemed to have plenty of fish. Have you ever been on the Moore lakes near 65 and 694?  Sometimes they get a lot of attention, and I’d have to think for good reason.   Twin Lakes in Robbinsdale used to be a favorite stop for us when we were young.  Did good on pannies and surprisingly well on pike. If you don’t mind traveling further west, Medicine is a pretty good lake.  Lots of memories fishing the crappie hole in front of the beach on the southwest side.

Gulp spray seems to help also.

I prefer ciscoes too.  I just don’t always have access to them.  They leave a better scent trail.  That’s part of the reason for a little kick of salt on the frozen suckers.  Anise could help too.

Not that I know of. First time I used one and constantly had to clear the shavings and drill kept cutting out. Drill is a 1200# fuel.

I always did best with frozen Cisco's suspended on a quick strike rig.
