great fishing 4-U

Stayed in the Ash river area and fished both Kabetogama and Namakan. Only fished Sun. Mon and Friday wind was to strong on Wed & Thurs and went to lake of the woods on tuesday. In fact I went to the ash river visitors center on wed. morning and they said wind was gusting to 40mph and the park service wanted everyone off the lake, and they said that there were boats on rainy & kab that had been swamped.

We started fishing the cuculus island and the mid lake reefs with little luck. This time of year we like to fish these areas but they did not produce much. We also fished the mouth of the ash river which was slow. We still caught fish but not like most years.

The best areas we found was a small bay about 1/2 mile east of the ash river, you go through a small narrows and then on your left there is a small bay that is not named on most maps but I think the locals call it peters bay. Also if you go about one more mile east (now your in namakan) there are a number of small islands that we did well around.

Most of the fish we caught were in about 18-25 feet. Graphed a lot of fish in 30-35 feet but they were not active. We also caught 2 walleyes in 5-6 feet casting for northern one on a 8" black/silver rapala and one on black/white dardevil both were about 21-22".

Most of the walleye fishing we did we used bottom bouncers with gold or green blades. Other colors did not do as well ( silver red blue ect.) We also did good with a plain hook with about a 5-6' snell.

The best day of fishing was the day we went to lake of the woods. We went out a long way to the humps by knight island. We only were able to fish about 4 hours B-4 the wind got to strong. Did manage to keep 9 walleyes plus one for the wall, my 18 year old caught a 30" 10 pound that we kept. I do C&R most all of the fish we get over 20" but this one he wanted to keep for the wall so we did.

All in all the fishing was ok we averaged about 1 fish an hour with 2 people in the boat. Not fast action but it was ok. Most of the fish we caught were under the slot but we did get a number of eaters, and about 6-8 over. Nothing to big on kab/nam the biggest was only about 22". Crawlers did seem to work the best but the bigger walleyes were taken off of leeches.

Hope this helps & good luck

Well, check that one of the list. After trudging through the slush Saturday we were rewarded with a handful of undersized crappie. We'll have to try some of the options around Pelican next time. Happy, safe fishing everyone.

Beautiful weather on Sat and Sun. but plenty of traffic! No traffic today but still a very slow bite this morning. Could just be the weather change!??? Cliff

Heading to that area this weekend - Curious as too how much snow cover is on the area lakes, and whether it's even worth bringing the wheelhouse?

I spent 3 hours last Saturday morning working on “the catalog” then went about my weekend, planning to finish at the end of the weekend.  Went to open it up and the new laptop won’t make pictures on the screen.  Tried everything; no dice.  Have to return the piece of Black Friday junk.

Cliff, did you have a lot of vehicle traffic around you on Saturday? Maybe the bad fishing on Saturday was just the weather conditions, although Saturday was beautiful weather-wise.

Same here. Thursday was a good bite and the weekend bite was mostly a bust! Cliff

I think he's going to not wash it and keep telling everyone at the bait store and on the lake he's a Pro Staff on HSO & Outdoors Minnesota. Until someone sends him a HSO hoody or new hat!
