Slots used on Kab

Recommended Posts

After fishin the Kab for over 20 years (2-3x per year), I was pretty excited when DNR announced its plans to use a slot limit system on Kab. I had personally experienced a 3-6 year turnaround in the quality of Walleye fishing up in Eagle Lake in Ontario in early 90's. So I guess I expected similar results. But, it has become disheartening to fish Kab for a primo week in mid-June, catch about 25 eyes, but only catch 1 Eye in 13-17 slot.

The slot is very controversial, don' t compare us to Eagle Lake, we compare more closely to Rainy Lake, mainly because of the experimental water levels we are dealing with. This year is so far the closest year we've had being in the curve as normal. In the past few seasons, we've experienced floods and near droughts and because of mis-judgements by the water regulation boards, water levelos have not been normal, affecting spawning, baitfish and ecology in general.

This year we recorded the coldest May and June since the've kept records.

Rainy Lake under the same influence, had very poor fishing before the slot, fair fishing after the implementation
and very good trophy fishing now, as well as good slot fishing.

Will Kab rebound and become the great fishery it should, we will wait and see, should the slot be changed or limits be changed, make your input be known to the DNR,the slot discussions will heat up in a couple of years, standby. guts

I couldn't agree more the positive points of Kab! I do think you bring up some really good points, especially about it being better to directly compare Kab and Rainy. Kab's a great body of water and if the overwhelming number of 17-23's ever break through that slot, it will yield some pretty exciting fishing.

Well, check that one of the list. After trudging through the slush Saturday we were rewarded with a handful of undersized crappie. We'll have to try some of the options around Pelican next time. Happy, safe fishing everyone.

Beautiful weather on Sat and Sun. but plenty of traffic! No traffic today but still a very slow bite this morning. Could just be the weather change!??? Cliff

Heading to that area this weekend - Curious as too how much snow cover is on the area lakes, and whether it's even worth bringing the wheelhouse?

I spent 3 hours last Saturday morning working on “the catalog” then went about my weekend, planning to finish at the end of the weekend.  Went to open it up and the new laptop won’t make pictures on the screen.  Tried everything; no dice.  Have to return the piece of Black Friday junk.

Cliff, did you have a lot of vehicle traffic around you on Saturday? Maybe the bad fishing on Saturday was just the weather conditions, although Saturday was beautiful weather-wise.

Same here. Thursday was a good bite and the weekend bite was mostly a bust! Cliff

I think he's going to not wash it and keep telling everyone at the bait store and on the lake he's a Pro Staff on HSO & Outdoors Minnesota. Until someone sends him a HSO hoody or new hat!
