Ice Conditions

For those of you interested, the ice conditions here are very bad. Checking ice this afternoon, and fell thru only about 10 feet from shore. The ice is only a mixture of ice, snow, and slush, and is not safe. The heavy snow of earlier this week is insulating the ice and not allowing it to freeze. We need a dose of cold weather to get things happening here. Fishkab

Expect to be back up there tommorrow and straighten things up to get the spearing opener ready to rock and roll. Although I've been out of the area a few days, I was informed that the usual resorts are putting out their spear houses on the shallow bays, ie; Tom Cod and Duck/Irwin. I hear that their is about 6" of decent ice in the shallows, I sure hope it is safe.

I talked to one of the local businesses up there, and they stated they have the decoy minnows and necessity items ready as usual for the spear fisherman.

Thanks for posting a snow report, I hope my place is plowed out when I get there, I think I made the arrangements.

Has anybody been out on the lake today for the opener? Any new reports on the lake conditions would help. I am wondering whether to bring the sled or 4-wheeler. Thanks in advance for any info!!

Hey Lundrunner, the fishing is spearing for Northern Pike. There is enough ice that they are fishing in Tom Cod and the Duck/Irvin Bay areas. Fishkab

LK, which visitor center are you asking about, Kab or Ash River, actually I guess as of yesterday, both are still questionable.

Foot traffic with caution is probably fine, however using a machine might be risky. We are having below zero evenings and low 20's for highs so we are slowly adding ice daily. I'll post later with an update.
