Nam & Kab 6/29-7/5

2 posts in this topic

Four of us fished eastern end of Kab and western end of Nam all week. Started great and then degraded with the weather constantly switching around (the dime sized hail on Sunday was a treat and put the fish down for the afternoon). In general the bite was best after 3 pm to about 7 pm, did well around submerged rockpiles in 16-18 feet vertical jigging leeches and crawlers. Lots of fish stacked up in 21-26 feet near mudflat areas but not yet organized on the mid-lake humps. We did well on these dragging 4-5 ft leader with 2 beads and a leech (color did not matter). Spinners were ok (caught fish on gold, red, green, chartruese so color really did not matter) but slower presentation worked better. Ratio of fish was 1:1:1 overslot, in slot, underslot for the week. Big mayfly hatch on Kab, fewer on Nam and only saw a dozen or so of those monster Hexagenia coming off. It felt like the wally were ready to "click on" but the weather and lake level had them screwed up. I would wager a dollar that the next few weeks will be very good for wally.

I would say the average size wally has increased over the last 3 years and now runs close to 16.5" with a lot more 21-24" fish.

The 5.5 inches of rain in under 3 hours on Friday sort of kept us from fishing. Great week on great water.
