Pressure ridges

I've seen a lot of really stupid things done around the pressure ridges this year, driving through red/orange markers into the water, moving barricades to drive into the water and on and on. Right now when the warmer weather is causing the pressure ridges to settle down into the water they are harder to see. Both last night and again this morning someone was looking at their GPS so intently that they drove right into the pressure ridge. rolleyes.gif We have to remember that our GPS's tell us the shortest line to where we want to go,,, not the smartest line. A GPS has no commen sense.

Kelly are the bridges still up across the ridge anywhere? Whats the ice looking like for Sat. Should I bring the four wheeler or can I still drive out on the lake? Just curious before I leave I will call up there. Tanks!

West Winds bridge is still there across the big ridge. We moved it again yesterday to a safer spot. Also in an emergency we can cross that one closer to shore.
There isn't any bridge across the new ridge that came out from the north shore across Hudec's road but there is plenty of room to fish on the east side of it. The ice is in great shape and the landings doing very well. West Winds landing now goes straight out into the lake rather then looping to the north so there is fresh unrutted ice and Tim has been using the grader along shore to kep it smoothed down. .

Hey Kelly-P,
My girlfriend has agreed to come up with me on Sat morning to fish the evening bite. She's a little worried about a 12 hour trip for 4-6 hours of fishing and she's pretty worried about falling through the ice. I know you can't guarantee anything, and ice is only as safe as the idiot driving on it, but what are the odds that we will be able to drive onto the ice to fish on Sat?
I think the last thing I need is to convince her to go and then have to walk out, or turn around and drive home without fishing.
Thanks for the info.

Erik

Did Russ tell you he had to pull me out? There was no way we could keep up. I did see a funny thing though it was either a meteor or a flying ice auger.

funny things have been happening in the "red lake triangle" all year long. i'm sure there's a perfectly logical explanation........currently employing many tie down straps-------jigglestick--------

well I bet Kelly is glad to get me on fish and out of there; I got to get his auger for two days,(the one with only half of the gas cap still attached and enough gas to drill 4 holes)I felt bad that I broke it I went to town and got another,we had a good laugh over that cause I didnt break it. the first night was a zip for me so the next day I tagged him around like a fly on sxxx, by 3 I was cathing fish, slowed down till 8 and were still biting at 10;30 glow jigs-white and pink Halad-you believe in your saying (YOU LIKE WATER) no I DONT!!! I couldnt wait to get to westwind in the morning to yak about you nose diving into the pressure ridge,(dont worry I will save you DUCK!!)as I watched you get out in 12" of water and your front wheels in 13ft of water,By the way do you know were the BIG roll of toilet paper went that was in the fish house?????? I was wondering why you wanted the heat on before you drilled the holes with the door locked!!!? thanks Hal; Jigglestick, Kelly told the story so you could see it frame by frame ,you got to remember airplanes are faster than you, even with the drivers door open, what is the bidding price on the augher at now?

Speaking of the triangle, last friday after moving for a few hours we finally found the fish. I get out drill, drop line, get bite, open the door to tell the youngster that we're going to fish there for a while, he gets out and my keys mysteriously get locked in the truck. How did the truck get locked?... Why was it only after we found fish?... mysteries upon mysteries.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
