JUST WANTED TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANY SING OF ICE ON ANY OF THE SMALLER LAKES I CAN'T STOP THINKING OF ICE FISHING IT SHOULDN'T BE MUCH LONGER!!!

I'm as anxious as you guys, but I am still saying farewell to the ducks!!

It won't be long before the small deeper lakes freeze, but it will take more cold to make them fishable. The slight warming trend for next week (highs in the 30's, lows in the 20's) will not freeze lakes fast enough.

I'm still duck hunting 200-300 acre lakes that are 15-20 feet deep, thanks to the strong winds. Maybe Saturday morning they will be hard???

Otter Tail water level is so low that ice is forming around the edges. The water was only 1-2 feet deep where there was ice. smile.gif Again, we need much more cold air to freeze large lakes here. Lots of steam coming off the big lakes (all day long) meaning that there is a big temp difference, in my opinion.

If it gets as cold as they say on Friday night, and the winds stay still, there is a good chance some of the smaller back bays on S.Turtle will lock up.

The shallow bay the I live on had 30% coverage of skim last Saturday, but that did not stay long.

There should be walkable ice by Turkey Day for sure of the daytime highs don't get out of hand.

I still have my dock in. If I think of it, I'll take a temp reading on Friday evening when I get back.

there's some ice out there! West Lost has a sheet across the main part, but it might be breaking up with the wind. Ottertail has lots of broken up ice on the northeast shore by the river inlet, so it appears the water is cold enough to freeze once the wind calms down. if the wind goes down tonight, they might all sheet over!

Snow Storm today frown.gif. Have about 6" of snow already? Talking high wind that might breakup frown.gif the ice there is? After the clipper goes through a warm up is predicted. So the GOOD ice question is still the 94 dollar question. MN has only two seasons < Mosquito season confused.gif & Road Construction>

Gissert, how does South Turtle look. I have been really busy and can't get out that way to see ice/water temps. You said last week that there was some ice coming did any stay or has this current warm up ruined everything for us?

I am so darn anxious to get out there. I have a bit of work to do to the icehouse once deer hunting is all over with and I round up some cash. Then I will be ready for fishing. A couple week from Thanks giving would work for me

Jigging Bob -

South Turtle was about 50% skimmed over Saturday morning, but the wind had cleaned that out by Sunday afternoon. I figured I had better get my dock out, so I pulled that on Saturday.

The big slough behind Big Island that is connected to the lake was 100 percent frozen.

I did drag a deer across a frozen section of swamp that had about 4 inches of ice. This swamp is connected to the lake and slough, but it is sheltered from the wind and sun.

I still think we will be fishing somewhere on Turkey Day.

Hey there Grand Dad don't give up yet.

There is still time. I never rely on weather forcasts over 3 days out, they are usually wrong. With the water cooled off the way it is, we could go from open water to wheelers and sleds in a matter of a few days. It has happened many times before. I remember one year back in the mid 70s when one evening Ottertail was open at dusk, and by 8:00 a.m. there was a man standing 200 yds offshore drilling holes in the ice. Of coarse I can also remember boat fishing in a sweater on Dec 3rd. on Ottertail. But the odds are in our favor. Maybe I will see you out there. I favor the area along the drop south of Amor park.
Good fishing

George

Thanks for the update Gissert, you have been a big help and saved me a trip out there.

I hope you are right about the weather men getting it wrong. I heard it is going to be warm all next week also. I am going to have to have some words with the "ice gods" pretty dog on soon.

errrrrr it is very frusterating, ice on one day and off the next. We need ice soon!!!!!! I haven't fished in months and I am starting to loose my mind. Keep on wishin' guys maybe them "ice gods" will change their minds.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
