i should be there at 5 am. right out from the landing. you'll see my truck when you go out from the landing on the north end right off 210. just to the right like 50 yards maybe.

Are you guys up for some tullibees on Monday? I'll be out there, and Geeman from the Shanty forum will probably be with me.

One little change in the plans. im thinkin i might go at 6 rather than 5. the early morning bite hasnt been too fantastic for me as of yet, most of the best fishing has been after it got a little light. we'll see how i feel at 4:30 when the buzzer goes off! smile.gifthis morning i iced 7 'bees and one really nice crappie, and lost several nice 'bees in the hole, missed a couple, and had a few picky buggers that didnt wanna bite. also had on something bigger, and i wonder if that lake has whitefish in it?> came in with a large school of 'bees and felt like it was about 3-4 pounds. alot of fight in that fish! i think if i woulda been on the ball, and been able to feel my fingers a little better, i woulda been able to catch at least a dozen.
this has been the best day for me by far, and I really beleive its gonna be unbeleivable in the coming weeks.

Sorry, but im headed home for sure tomorrow, so i wont be around on monday more than likely. we'll see. next weekend i think i should be around for sunday morning, or monday morning for sure of next week, the 24th?
good fishing, and we'll see whoever shows up tomorrow!

Have a good trip home.

You may have had a pike hit you there. They sometimes will follow the suspended 'bees. That like has a few heavy hitters in there.

I'm out for the 22-23rd. I'll be in Canada chasing lakers, crappies, 'eyes, and perch. Yahoo!

So how was it today out there guys?? still wind up going or decide not to?? fished red rock yesterday and got some decent perch and a couple decent sunnies, lots of baby ones. looks like the ice around here is goin downhill fast. redrock looked like about 18"-2 feet of honeycomb and 8" of good ice under that... if it rains it may be the end of it. we'll have to see here what the weather brings!

We caught one 'bee and one crappie on Clitherall, but we got there a tad later than I like.

Ottertail had a lot of smallish perch, and wouldn't you know it, some of the nicest 'eyes of the year, LOL.

Time to rig up for Canada tomorrow!

If you ever have an evening free, I know of a spectacular night crappie bite! Tulibees mixed in too, believe it or not.
Let me know!

That sounds like fun. I probably will hang up my ice gear after we get back from Canada. I need to pick up the pace in my basement so I can get some fishing done this summer, LOL.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey, Gogblonhead.
I haven't fished for 2 weeks! I was thinking of fishing this evening??
The weather looks like it's gonna be wet and cool for the rest of the week. I got some bees out there last time....in the dark....

shot 7 snows out in SD yesterday. shoulda had at least 10, but i got greedy and passed on 3 that were 15-20 feet up for a bigger flock that was cupped and committed behind them, wound up not coming in and we got burned! dang. thats what happens when you get greedy, but if we woulda shot, we would never know if that whole flock woulda come in!!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
