Widetrack
After reading your posts a few weeks ago I went out and ordered some of those West River Spoons. Had them shipped in from NY. I am finally going to get to use them this weekend. Is there any special presentation or action you use with these things? I can hardly wait to try it out!

Aren't they nice?
You need a pretty stiff rod to fish spoons this size. I use a 3' genz MH action rod, and a no stretch line. This combination will make that spoon dance like crazy. I usually fish it a couple feet off the bottom, occasionally dropping it to the bottom, and shaking it there. I like to get the fish to chase it up then pause and shake it... If I can't get them to go, I'll drop it back beneath them and start over. Taking the bait away from a bigger fish with this spoon, then stopping it and shaking it will produce the most vicious strikes you will ever get from a walleye.
A 28inch typical rod I see most guys using isn't going to work this spoon right in my opinion.
Good luck.

I got to see the "widetrack wiggle" first hand on Friday and even those negative fish just pounded that thing. It was pretty cool.
Wide track, just wanted to say thanks again. I sent you an e-mail this morning.

The 'Widetrack Wiggle', now that one is gonna stick!!!
Upon WT's advice I went out and bought that rod he mentioned for using big spoons. I finally dropped that west river down the hole on this rod that afternoon, stopped it 5 foot above bottom and gave it the 'Widetrack Wiggle', and Zoooom up raced a fat 17 incher that just plain hammered it....I'm a believer! Even the Jumbo's and midsize Perch hammer those things with reckless abandon. Can't wait to drop one again sometime when the bite is on!
fiskyknut

Looks like I'm in the market now for a new 3' MH rod spooled with fireline. I'll have to pick one up before I leave. I'll let you know if I encounter any of those earth shattering strikes you describe. Thanks for all your help.

Is this West River Sutton spoon similar to the Savant Sutton Spoon that is used for Lake Trout, a pretty big, thin metal spoon?

Yes it is. I can use my 32" Med St.Croix's with these without a problem. A med/hev would also be good but in a house its hard to go much more than 32" for me.

rhski, I'm with you. Both widetrack and Fisky are knowledgable dudes. I hope to meet up with them sometime this year. rhski and I are shirt-tail relatives so I'd imagine he's a sharp guy too (of course I may be a little biased grin.gifgrin.gif)
Fisky and widetrack, rumor has it you're meeting up with Dr. Bob this weekend. Scoot, I will be up next thurs. thru the weekend at M.Pt. We may try Red on the way up, 'cause my bud's can't sleep the nite before a trip so we might leave Fergus about midnite. We still don't know weather to bring four-wheelers or also have access to sleds, hopefully we can just get around with our pickups. Sounds like it's a mess off the trails , but we gotta be mobile. If you have any solid info on getting around I sure would appreciate a heads up. I will try to get out and find your dad if the guys will let me,they make me fry fish and cook till they get full and boy do they eat a lot! Hope to see ya cuz I believe we should have a couple cool ones soon. bob
Scoot -
Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully we will be able to hook up for that beer on Friday.
Widetrack is not fishing with Fisky and I though. We are just fishing in one of his "spots" (thanks WT). He is busy with Hockey for the next 2 weekends and cannot make it. That is a bummer! I was really hoping to meet him.
It will be tough sleeping tonight - that is for sure!

I get it, Dr. Bob- I thought you meant both of them.
WT- just so you don't think I'm trying to butter you up too much... I still remember that you're a Sioux fan! Oh well, nobody's perfect!!! Seriously, I'd like to meet up with you fellas some time and see what I can pick your brain for. I'm no LOW slouch-been going there since '75, so I've got a trick or two up my sleeve too. However, I would love to hear all of your double-top secret muskie tricks some day- I'm new to that gig.
Good luck this weekend guys.
------------------
Scoot
So I got dat goin’ for me… which is nice.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end... The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free. Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well. Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike. Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River. Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently. Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn. Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options. Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River... Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing. Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues. A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River. Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise. Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale. The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st. Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing. One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker. Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle... A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water. In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener. Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years. Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads. Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water. Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad. Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
