The Hill Bar in Squaw Lake burnt to the ground!

I can't remember the name but you can Google the list and search by name. The one you mentioned doesn't ring a bell though. Glad you weren't a victim!!

Yeah going to have to check out Hayslips Corner 1 of these days, brother's been over there. Was just over to Riley's on Tuesday, some meat raffles going on & had pretty good crowd, didn't eat though. Used to go there more but not much since we started going to Squaw Lake. We're only ~ 10 miles from the Spring Lake Store & the little blue guy.

It's days for you & weeks for us, so we don't have to hit the water when it's -40.;) Sometimes we're just looking to get out for a couple hours. Heard that too about the TW, very spendy. Used to eat at Riley's with the mom & dad. From what I've seen, lately, it doesn't look like anyone compares to The Hill, at least for their Cheap Burger Night. Everybody's more $ & not as good IMO

Been there to, on Tuesday, when we went in to GR. As usual good food, quick service, & reasonably priced. Hot beef & hot pork sammies this time

It's unreal how fast the Sportsman can get that food out even when it's packed. You never leave hungry there and it is darn good. I usually have the hot beef. Just ate there last week. The price is reasonable for all you get. The T--Wolf is a bit spendy but really good also, plus it's only three miles from me. And Hayslips, all I can say is it is a very unique place. I always stop for a quick one or three. Have to support the locals. Richeys shut down so I'm down to two places now.

Been there too, but not in a long long time. Not real sure that would be much of a money making operation.;)

richies used to be a huge mecca/ starting point for snowmobiles back in the day. it was nothing to see 50-75 sleds there on weekends!!

It was hopping years back. Live music on weekends. Snowmobile trail went right through the parking lot so that was always packed on weekends. Had a lot of fun times there.  Had a restaurant back then also. When the Wolf got built that put a huge hit on Richies. Too bad it's locked, would always meet my local buddies up there. Things change as time goes on, some for the better but it's always hard to see places lock up in small towns.

Seen some live music there but never there during the winter, so no sleds. Seem to remember them having a big 4th of July bash going on

The old atmosphere of the hill will be tough to replace the food was always good especially if you wanted more than just a burger. (ie good steak). The Hill was just down the road from my place and I really feel bad for the staff as jobs can be a little tricky to come by up there especially the really good waitresses that just came over from the Gosh Dam    Anybody ever get in on the all you can eat crab at the hill it was awesome! Think it was Monday nights.

Good luck to them all in the future hopefully its sooner than later!

Actually spoke to them  over at our neighbors, that he built, open house this summer & he said they were still fighting with the insurance company. The scuttlebutt we hear, from someone that knows their boy well, is she doesn't want too. Too hard to get the business built back up. It looked to us, before we came home for the holidays, like Jerry was doing the remodel on the old North Star grocery store that Cenex closed this year. Some sort of meat shop rumored to be going in there

Why not use the insurance money to rebuild and get it going then sell it off with the land and Motel if you don't want to run it?  Unless they get to pocket the money and just run the Motel only?  ?

Not sure, leech~~. But her health may have a play into it, as about the time he was rebuilding our place, he started just after Labor Day 2013, she had a major accident while riding 1 of her horses. The horse landed on her & crushed her hips, so bad they said she was lucky to be alive & were afraid she'd never walk again.  Her not being around to do his paperwork actually caused some issues with some of the other sub-contractors at out place. Many surgeries later ,with them having to come down to Mayo for the last, she seems to be able to get by.  I agree to in that I think the business would be easier to sell with the bar & restuarant too. Another issue is that all her good help has had to find different work & would be very hard to replace. Know there's quite a few people  that are  still hoping they rebuild.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
