Ice house license law change

Yesterday the MN DNR announced a license requirement change effective NOW for this ice season. All Wheel House and other fishing structures which cannot be folded / collapsed must be licensed even if you remove the house when you get off the ice.

Next year you will have to buy one for wearing long underwear or pac boots.

If I remember right you used to have to get a license a while ago before they changed it to the if you occupied it rule.

I don't think 14.33 a year is going to break anyones bank. Hopefully they use the extra money for stocking purposes

Not by itself it won't but they raised the price on licenses for everything. Once you add it all up I'll bet you never got that big of a raise at your job. I paid for an ATV license since they first came out and we didn't get squat for it for over 20 years. What a joke, not to mention debacles like Mille Lacs Lake management. AAARRGGHHH!!  I gotta quit now before I pop a vein.

Really no different than using your boat.  $14,000 fish house and $14.33/year is going to kill you??

What gets me is at the lake we are at in the summer, mostly out of state people in the campground and all of their boats, never leave that lake and they are all licensed out of state and not in MN.  That is a chunk of money the state does not see.

The 200 foot rule gets me a little but it has to be defined somehow what is occupied and what isn’t.

So for a wheelhouse we get to buy tabs to have on the road and a sticker to have it on the ice and go away for a little while.  Seems pretty close to double taxation since any LE can find out who the owner is from the current plate.

Plus the spear shack that I might want to keep up over the weekend.  2 tags plus license.

Combination sports license

2 trout stamps

Waterfowl stamps

Pheasant stamp

Turkey license (stamp now included)

Deer license for all seasons

The bucket is getting heavy with all the drops in it.

With 2 trout stamps you can keep double your limit.

You heard it here first on the interwebs! ;)

Me and Mr Williams will swing by and say Hi this winter in Ely. :D  That is, if we can get around your sled!!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, I have to pay for registration on my boat trailer to run it on the road, and the boat to run it on the lake, why shouldn't wheel houses?  I guess I don't feel bad for the wheel house guys.

A boat and trailer are two separate pieces of equipment.  The trailer is titled and the boat isn’t.  You can have one and not the other for any amount of reasons.

The wheelhouse is one item and titled, hence the plate.  Shelter tags primary purpose (besides raising money) is to officially verify who is responsible for it.  You can do that with a plate number.

Is what it is.  But I’ve just been having more difficulties considering the license fees as just another drop in the bucket.  If ALL the money was used for managing wildlife and habitat I’d have an easier time with it.

Wasn't too long ago that you had to liscense all fish houses including portables that were fished in just for daily non overnight use

I think back then you were supposed to have a shelter tag to sit in your vehicle to watch tip ups too.

Yah, I know it was worse before but it was nice to have some relief for a little while.

I forgot to add to the above license fees:

Snowmobile registration

ATV registration

Canoe, kayak, anything over 10 feet reg.

Every trailer tabs (I cling to my trailers that have the lifetime sticker).

I guess it could be worse... Fact is, I have to buy the shelter tags anyway cuz I will be leaving my hub house up overnight a few times and will leave the wheelhouse unattended overnight once.  First World problems in ice fishing. ;)

It's not that it's any significant amount of money.  It's just that it won't go towards anything useful.  Imagine if everyone put $5 into the kitty for their 3 most fished lakes for the season and the money went towards dumpster rental and free garbage bags at the landing.  Or perhaps a dedicated fund to open up the thousands of lakes in MN that don't have public access?

  • 1 month later...

A bump on this post for two reasons:  I wasn’t 100% clear the wheelhouse needs a shelter license to be on the ice no matter what...  go ahead, call me half blind.  I thought the 200 ft rule applied here too.

The other: I’m going through mail and have a collection of 8 registration renewals that are due.  I go whine to the wife a little and she asks, Do I have enough shelter licenses for this weekend?

No!!   Not if I want to set the hub house out and not babysit it.  Need to pick up that second one tomorrow.

If your cabin is less than 200 ft, your fine...

A shelter meeting the new definition of portable only needs a license when a person leaves it unattended, meaning they are farther than 200 feet from the shelter

That’s the way I read it the first time too.  Re-read the first paragraph where it says wheelhouses OR dark house shelter.....even when occupying it.

So how I read it is if I drag my flip over house out with all my gear and go hole hopping, which I often do, I gotta stay within 200 feet of the portable or license it.  Does this apply if the portable is not set up in this scenario.   I think they call it a sled in that condifion.

@Borch

It used to be that way, calling the flip over a sled if it wasn’t set up.  I don’t know if that’s still a go with the regulation change.  Just going by the press release on the subject, I’d say NO, but there are always more details.

You might want to get the official word from them.  The biggest thing that changed here is they want those fees and aren’t afraid to say so anymore.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
