Questions about Upper Red

I'm heading up to Blackduck for the long July 4th weekend and we are hoping on maybe getting out on Red for a day.  I've only ice fished it twice,  so I'm wondering about the best places to launch the boat.  It looks like there is only the one public launch in Waskish.  The 2 times I ice fished up there we went out of JR's Corner resort.  Would it be best to just launch from one of the resorts.  Any advice would be appreciated,  thanks in advance.

I recommend considering other lakes.  URL by the 4th is nearly void of walleye.  8 years or so ago, we did a two-family trip and only caught fresh water drum.  Star Trib Article

We've done well in late June.   May need to move offshore more.  Cranks or spinners till you find fish then slow down if needed.

I use the public access.  Not usually too busy mid summer.

Besides there's 3 nice ramps there. 1 on the west, 2 to the east of the bridge.

Thanks guys for the input,  hopefully Monday the wind will be down and I'll get out there.  I have a shack on Mille Lacs so I'm excited to actually fish a lake where we might be able to catch a few for a fish fry.  Thanks again.

I'll post how it goes,  so far wind predictions are favorable,  6mph out of SSE.   The wife doesn't put up with white caps so hoping for the best.

June 30, Two of us 8-walleye 14-16 between the rain storms. The wind rules on Red.

I meant to post earlier,  guess our bad luck didn't help.  we went out of Waskish on July 3rd.  Nice and calm so we went to the reef about 8 miles out.  Only caught 1 keeper, 1 dink,  and about 4 big sheephead.  At least it was a gorgeous day.

The fish are fairly dispersed in the summer, numbers wont be like the beginning of the season. You will catch sheepshead but if thats all youre catching youre doing it wrong. Cover a lot of water and work out deep as winds allow. Early mornings are best with a hit or miss evening bite this time of year.
