We had a "Great Save" last fall with the Happy Hooker group.  Our original booking fell through the morning of our trip so we had to scramble if we wanted to fish.  Our new Captain got himself and the boat ready on very short notice and got us on fish immediately.

He really made a great day out of a bust.  I wouldn't hesitate to go out of Duluth with him again.

Any of the captains from happy hooker or optimum charters

I do have to shout out to Carl Brandt who runs early morning risers he really helped me out didn't even have his boat in the water yet it was the year that they still had ice out there in May he got his boat ready and in the water in 2 days for us. We caught brown loopers choho and even a musky he said he wanted to go to the river so we could get walleye too but we never had time.

So the reason he got his boat ready quick for me is I had a deposit  with Adam Bohlmann

I kept tried to get ahold of him the week prior just to touch bases and make sure time to be at the slip and no answer then he puts this up on his website

Due to a rough winter and poor weather conditions this spring plus other delays, new boat this season, divorce, etc, we are not presently accepting reservations for the 2014 season. We are however taking reservations for the 2015 charter seans begining May 15th 2015.

If you sent a depost for the 2104 season please text or email to request a refund or to reaserve a date for the 2015 season.

Capt. Adam Bohlmann

No big deal Ill get my money back later kind of rude not to my answer my calls but whatever. Booked with Carl and had a good time. Emailed Adam back and he actually responded saying yes he will refund well never saw it. After that phone calls and text messages and emails went unanswered. I even said that I would want to just transfer the deposit and go on a charter with him (which would of made him money )  but I guess he wanted to steal it instead. I know he owns the pawn shop in Duluth as well I was thinking about going there but decided $200 bucks isn't worth getting into an altercation over.

So moral of the story stay away from him       (duluthcharterfishing.com)

And while I have not taken a charter with him yet I plan to next time I book one. A member on here

Lots of great charter opportunities in the Twin Ports:

Capt. Chris Larson with Duluth Sport Fishings, Capt. Lorin Lemaire with Fish of the Gitch, Capt. Rob Herring with Opti, Captain Tom Linderholm Superior Sport Fishings. Capt. Jordan and Capt. Kent with Fish North MN, Capt. Matt Massie with Happy Hooker, etc..

If you are looking for a walleye charter, yours truly (Capt. me) can accommodate that.  If I am booked, we can get you set up with Capt. Steve Sutherland, Capt. Chris Edquist, Capt. Charlie Nelson, etc etc.  PM me for more information.

Enjoy your weekend,

JH

Whatever happened to Whitewater Charters? Years ago, before I started fishing Lake Superior myself, I took my boys who were young at the time out and we used Whitewater and the captain did a fantastic job on getting us on fish. Barry was his first name, if I recall.

In fact, when the trip was over, we did better than the other returning charters

Barry is retired. I bought his boat and fished her unitl I got the 38'er. Team Crush is still using the old Whitewater.

Barry does work on my boat occasionally as the first mate.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
