Bla bla bla, all this Walleye talk is boring me to death. ;)  The real opening day is this Saturday when the Muskie opener comes to Minnesota and the Big V.  I'll be out fishing with my son and grandson searching for some real fish. ;)  The weather looks great, my baits are all sharpened and the new line is on all my rigs. Bucktails, Glittertails, spinnerbaits and minnow style cranks will make up most of our arsenal, however we will also be tossing a few topwaters looking for those Big green girls and not even talking about Walleye fishing. ;)

Have a great weekend everybody! ;)

Love eating those Walleyes Cliff, however I prefer catching something a little more exciting. ;)  I still have a few Walleye gigs coming up in June, but then it's all Muskies all the time. ;)

We planned our wedding to work out so that we would be coming up every year for our anniversary around opener, which seems to be a good time of year for a good overall bite and before the may flys start appearing. We honeymooned at Hollys little cabin across from strawberry island last year which made it easier for checking out some parts of the lake that i have never been by on boat. We owned Jim Kivelas old place in Pike Bay so we really never ventured past the narrows except by snowmobile in winter. This year we are booked up in Ely to try Shagawa friday / saturday for walleye and plan to hit up Vermilion Sunday. Been thinking about this weekend for a solid month, cant wait to get on the lake!

Hey any tips for fishing the BIG V? Heading up on opener as well guessing the northern bays wouldn't be bad to try?

Their everywhere just start chunkin,be prepared to take a number on prime spots, walleye color is a  favorite, use small 6 to 12 inch baits on the east end and 12 to 24 inch on the west end !!

I don't even fish those so called "Prime spots", I leave them to the tourist. There are great locations that rarely get fished except for a few anglers. If it looks good fish it, that's my mantra. Bucktails, Glittertails, spinnerbaits, minnow baits and topwaters are what I throw in the early summer much of the time. As far as the different sizes on the west and east I don't know if I can agree with that, but hey, to each his own. They were spawning a week ago in a number of the back bays on the east end, so I expect them to still be in the shallows, however they aren't all doing the same thing all the time so use your imagination and cast until your arms fall off. ;)

I lost count of how many boats tried a "prime spot" while were were pulling in the eyes off the breakline of one of my favorite spots last year. Almost comical. But a good spot is a good spot, a few years back we saw a guy pull a 52" Skie off that spot. Like Ace i think you would have better luck on much less pressured fish rather than taking a ticket to wait in line. :2c:

Your just fine hitting those spots unless you are using what everyone else is using.  If your tossing #10s, dawgs or the same popular prop baits as everyone else id tend to agree.  I go with the old adage "what's old is new" when i fish vermilion.

I hear the hot musky bait up there is the baby beaver. It won a turny or two

We are coming up next weekend. What does a good muskie spot look like?

Spent muskie opener with my wife and daughters girlscout troop at the zoo. If only the kids really understood the sacrifices that I make for them........ Anybody get any stink in their net? I'll be out there tomorrow. Weather looks to be nicer then orginally guessed, or "predicted" as they say if u get paid to do it.  I'm still hoping for some wind and rain tomorrow. Anyway, if u see bait on the graph, it's a good muskie spot.

My son boated a 42 incher on Sunday and had several follows and two fish came unbuttoned near the boat. All in all a pretty good opener.  All of the action came on bucktails in the weeds.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
