Transducer issue

Question

heymikey

Hi-

I just bought a 17' Crestliner that came with a Humminbird 798 CI. I mounted the transducer on the back of the boat per the instructions and ran the cable to the unit. The GPS works fine, but the depth reads a constant zero feet. The bottom of the transducer seems to be parallel with the bottom of the boat about 20" to the right of the motor (90 HP). I will try to post pictures when I get home (and it stops raining!). Is my transducer angle just off? Is it possible to test out of the water? Thanks for helping someone who is just getting back in to fishing!

Welcome to the forum.  Have you tried it in the water yet?  The best test will be in water.  Try turning it on and go put your ear on the bottom of the transducer, if you hear clicking it's should be working.  Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, leech! Yes, it was in the lake when it was reading zero. I will try the "click test".Anything look wrong from these pictures?

Looks like you have mounted it pretty well if you ask me. Just about the same as on my boat. If it was a used unit I'd get out and check for the click, you may need a new ducer.  :(

Can you help clarify what you are seeing?

Are you seeing the bottom of the lake on the graph or are you getting no signal at all on the locator? Is the "depth reading a constant zero" just the numerical readout of the dept or is the screen completely void of any signal or information?

Install looks good. Is this a new transducer or did you purchase it used? The 798 has been out of production for a few years now, so if it's the original transducer (not sure why it wasn't installed) that could point to a problem. Does it read zero both sitting still and moving or only when you are moving?

In your setup, do you have the correct transducer selected or at less a compatible universal one selected?

Thanks all for your replies! It turns out the connector wasn't fully seated in the bracket (metal clamp) that the head unit mounts on (told you I was just getting back into it).

Thanks again!
