Hopefully there is some standing corn left on our land in Monticello it was pretty much wiped out last time I was up there though.

I took Finn for a drive as he hurt his leg. We seen so many turkeys. We saw snow geese, Canada geese, swans, mallards, crows, deer, pheasants, and cranes

Next weekend i am going to check out a few places and call? Who else is going to do that?

Got tags for my 10,12 and 14 year old this year. Found a nice spot and need to get out and scout.  Any suggestions for scouting as I have never scouted turkeys?  Should I be out there looking for poop on the ground to find their night roosting spot?  Do they roost in several spots or typically one? Should I scout in the am or eve?  Sorry for all the questions but I'm as my kids would say "a newb". I love the permits cost me $8.50 for all three boys.  I'm not hunting, rather just trying to be their guide.  Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I like to park and listen for them gobbling on the roost just before first light. Then come back mid day to locate the roost. I normally end up hunting them in the fields where I watch them spend most of their time. Most of my scouting is done at long range using my ears and binoculars

I'll be hunting a new area up north where we Deer hunt. It's all deep woods with no crop fields at all but we have seen a bunch of them up there in the last few years. Seems like they call or gobble less, not sure if that is because there is lots of things to eat them up there? Could be a little harder hunt then where we hunted down by Houston, MN for years.

Hey monstermoose Im in princeton or by Longsiding.  I think I have a decent spot as the farmer says he sees them out there a lot.  Never found a better scout than a farmer.  Just havent hunted turkey much.  I appreciate the generous offer and the advice. Looking forward to watching my boys get the turkey fever.  Last year I would have hit you up for those spots as we did some sitting in blind to watch the sun come up. Thanks all for the advice and helping a new turkey hunter out.

Send me a pm for some ideas in the area. I plan on hunting Dayton and Monticello mainly but if those don't work out I need some backup plans. ;)

Silly goose, never use a turkey call unless you are hunting. Great way to make call shy birds.

I thought Archery is not restricted correct me if I am wrong

Licenses for the Spring Turkey Hunts are awarded in a computerized preference drawing for the A-B time periods. C-F time period licenses can be purchased over the counter in mid-March. Turkey hunters, other than licensed archery hunters and youth are restricted to the WILD TURKEY PERMIT AREA and TIME PERIOD selected at time of purchase

I could have been wrong but normally you had to pick a zone

I didn't think so I will ask the dnr but the way it reads youth and archery are not restricted to zone and time

Went over to my dads to drop off some cookies and thought I should sneak out back to see what is inthe field. I got to the pond and gobbles everywhere. 2 hens walk by followed by 7 jakes with 4 to 5 inch beards. Then a thunderous gobble and tom came out about 20 feet from me. My guess is he has 10 plus inch beard and well over inch spurs. I watched them go over the hill so moved closer to the field to see 3 strutters on the west end with a group of 4 hens by oak tree inthe middle. I decided I would back out and was almost to the house and a tom jumped out if the swamp and scared the crap out of me. It flew over the pond out to the field. I could feel the air being moved by his wings as he was maybe 5 feet from me.

I have patterned my shotgun for my nephew he is going to use the old 870 with the short stock Gordie made and I have been shooting my crossbow and I good to go. The nephew has been calling me about what he needs to bring with him I told him black clothes gloves and boots. I moved the blind to the front of the garage along with my decoys.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
