Well the ice is all but done. 16-24" depending where you are on the west end bays. Honeycombed to say the least. Fished Friday and Saturday with wheelers. Walked Sunday due to ice conditions. Some did take out wheelers/sleds Sunday. Fishing was slow. 39" was the biggest for us. Not many fish caught in general. Fished 4-8 fow and moved around quite a bit.  Saw a couple over 40" caught as they were kept. Lot of pressure for how bad the ice was. Seems like more and more people chasing pike every year. Would like to see regulations change to protect 30-42" fish or bigger even.

We took ATV out of Graceton Saturday and when we stopped and a puddle of water formed under ATV we brought them back to shore and walked out.  We had 16" of honeycombed ice on Saturday and maybe 14" on Sunday with some pretty saggy spots closer to shore.  We skipped fishing on Monday due to bad ice conditions.  Saw a couple of ATV's and a sled head across to Knights I think.  They were on an adventure.  We got some fish but not gangbusters.

Just wondering if any one has been around the point  in Warroad, and how open it is, and if any one has been fishing? A buddy and I were thinking about going up fri. Thanks in advance for any info. Stay Safe Good Luck  Bear55

The satellite photos show quite a bit of open water along the Warroad shore.  Geez - we need someone on shore to holler out what they are seeing.

Bear.....I'm assuming that you're fishing with rod and reel?  I've never gone up to LOTW to fish pike after last/late ice.  When you've done this are you in a boat? Just on a shoreline or river? I'd love to try this sometime!

Using the long rods, and dead bait. I mostly fish off the docks or along the rocks to the point. Have taken the boat the success rate was about the same. If you use your boat you can not go up river to fish inland rules apply, there is an imaginary line I believe its by the café that's closed now hope this helps. Stay Safe Good Luck Bear55

Also this can be a timing bite, have seen people casting spoons, blade baits they did catch fish but mostly smaller ones. I think the bigger ones are looking for the easy meal. Stay Safe Good Luck Bear55

This time of year we have caught dozens from shore casting spoons & spinners, but like Bear55 says, mostly smaller ones, i.e. less than 40 inchers.  Lots of fun though.

Heck.....that sounds like a good time!  We make multiple trips up during the March/April run, but we've never gone up to fish with rods after the ice has started to go.  Next year!   It's time to start chasing some Toms!!

Thanks guys!

  • 2 weeks later...

A buddy and I fished fri. 4-14 had some ice issues once it hit shore and the wave action it was gone pretty quick. We fished about 5.5 hrs  5-fish 39-36-34- and 2 mid 20s. I went back mon. and tues. slow at first between 1-5 7 fish but the biggest was 32in the people out were getting fish also, tues got one right away 36 then it got dead the other people out did not catch any thing either may be the weather, it was pretty brutal and didn't stay to long. Proably wont get to Lowts for awhile now and always enjoy going their. Stay Safe Good Luck Bear55

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
