Have not been after them this year but when I do I like a tip up with a 4 inch or so sucker minnow about a foot off the bottom in 10 to 25 feet.

I got one and missed one today 4 to 6 inch suckers under a float cause with my hand a can't use a tip up any more.

Got this one while fishing with my boy near Bemidji. Caught on a bro bug and wax worm.

Fished 2 1/2 weeks solid for NP, and panfish.  Found lots of bites on larger suckers, but almost all were dropped.  Gold and silver shiners were preferred by all sizes.  Usually get the bigger ones on 4-8 suckers.

shallow water seems to be working the best for me 7-10ft

the northern that hit the sucker hit it 3-4 times then lost interest, i could tell the harness and always hit the head
