Aug 5-6 Superior Report

Aug 5, 5PM till dark.  Winds had been out of the WNW pushing warm water out and cold water back to the surface.  We trolled between the French and McQuade staying on the temp break.  Pink has been a hot color so we made sure we had pink Husky Jerks out.  There were plenty of targets in the whole water column but All action was on top, went 5 for 4 with one big coho, one steelhead, and two lake tout.

Aug 6, plan was to get up early and do the same as the evening before.  Found the cool water but never a well defined break.  Not much for suspended fish and again we we ran pink sticks on top.  Action was dead till we put and once of lead on. Went 6 for 3 with two big coho and a lake trout.  Ended the day at noon.aug coho.jpg

Thanks for the report. When you put the lead on, how deep do you think the lures were running? Do you just use 10 or 20# mono?

On Friday you couldn't run your lures high enough.   Our 1st fish hit a lure occasionally skipping the surface that was popped from a rigger to change color.  We didn't even have a board out at that time but you can bet we changed up. :)

Running lures high on Sat didn't produce so try something else with 1 oz and another with 2 colors LC.  Both are going to rise and fall on the turns but LC will do that a bit more even.  They'll run about the same depth and both took a coho in short time.

2.8 MPH 150' set back with 1 oz I'm putting the lure at around 10-15'.  LC would be closer to 10'.  The chop and surge and slack of the boards,  point is to be able to duplicate what has worked.   Of coarse we worked the suspended fish as well but wasn't able to put something together to take any of them.

I'm not privy to hot reports and not many of us are, so when we hit the water cold you have to figure it out.   Time, lines in the water, and options.   Having an assortment of lead to put on is a small investment and makes one rod versatile.

I fished this area about 2 weeks ago and it was pretty much pointless to run boards.  only 4 fish out of 25 came on the boards, and 2 were walleye.  the rest were 50-75 down on the riggers.  Was my first trip up there in a private boat, much more fun than piling onto a charter.
