Sad to see this forum so dead.

We need all of you to contribute to make this site work.

Had some company over the weekend and they wanted to get out and fish.  The kind of company that don't get up early either so besides the high winds we were out in the middle of the day.   Way to windy for the Big lake so we hit Fish lake.  At least we could duck out of the wind a little bit there.  It had been a long time since I fished it and had to read up on the regs.  3 fish between 13-17 which is pretty much my personal slot anyway.

Was prepared to watch slip bobs,  troll cranks, toss jigs, or slow troll spinner/leech.  We started out with the later.  Orange is my preference on Fish lake but when rummaging for a spinner and I fish a chartreuse1st thats OK.    Within minutes I had a 14.5" eye out of 12 FOW and in the boat and of coarse that just reinforced my guests thought's that you don't have to get up early to catch fish.   That caught the attention other fishermen that up till then weren't in sight, or maybe they were getting out of the wind too.  Not long after the 1st fish I had a 2nd one on that felt good.  I kept the rod tip low as to hide it and well, it came unstuck.   One of my guests at 32 years old had never caught a fish.  Picky eyes on a day bite isn't the best way to fix that but that didn't stop her as the next eye was her's.   She could have been 8 years old by that amount of squeals and excitement and half the lake heard it too.  A while later she boated a second eye that went into the livewell to keep its friends company,  they're going to a fish fry.

Sounds like you made the best out of a bad day and did fine Frank!

I did not fish yesterday as it was just to windy on Vermilion! Canceled today's trip also!

I have noticed that very few posts have been made over the past months. Not sure if fishing folks are not willing to share or if they are too busy catching fish.

I'll add my brief report for Fish...Fished a couple hours in the morning last week. The slot is working. I caught 5 walleye just under 13" and one just over 17. Didnt have any live bait. Smaller ones on jig and plastic. The larger on a husky jerk. I know there are plenty of fish over the slot. I get quite a few in the fall. I just dont seem to be as adept at locating the bigger ones on Fish in the summer...but that's usually the case on most lakes.

Son was out there a week ago and brought home a slot eye and a few dandy crappies.  They were trolling islands, no particular one.  BC

I FINALLY have something to post about..

Had an incredible day on Fish Lake. I have to agree that the slot appears to be working. C&R 2 unders and 4 overs w/ the largest being a very plump and ornery 22". Ended up w/ a couple of slots and a few nice Croppies that will be enough for a generous meal. C&R quite a few rather impressive Sunnies and Pumpkins as well.

The biting flies were horrid when the breeze would die down though. Might have to give it a go again tomorrow.

What a difference a day makes. Tried my luck on Fish Lake again today. didn't catch nearly the volume as yesterday, a few overs, 1 slot fish, and some decent pannies. Still, it was a great day to be on the water.

This is good to see. I need to get on Fish Lake more often.  Since we have a membership at the club on Island, I end up fishing there a lot. We camp, shoot, and have the boat docked for fishing. Could easily leave the boat on the trailer and head to Fish Lake for a few hours...

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
