2016 Detroit Lakes Area Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

My days of fishing pretty much fall off the table in the fall. Coaching my little guys FB team is really fun but also a huge time suck. We had our first practice August 1st and will have our last game October 23. In between there are 4000 other things that need to be done. Also I just love bow hunting so that get's pretty much all my free time. I fish a lot before then so I am OK with not going much in late summer. With that being said my boat is still in the garage charged up and ready to roll at a moments notice. I will get out once more for sure, maybe twice but probably not. I would just rather be up in a tree than on the lake.

Paceman I know what you mean.  I hunt over by Ada and haven't seen anything on my trail cameras that even makes me think I should be in a tree stand though!  I'm hoping after harvest since we started so early this year I can get in one over Halloween.

Chill62, I am in the same boat. I have 5 cameras out on 3 different properties around DL. Lots of does/fawns and smaller bucks. I know there are big ones in the area, just have to be patient until they show up. I will use my management tag on a nice doe if given the chance and then wait for big one. I will hunt pretty hard Halloween through November. Archery, rifle, muzzy, then perhaps late archery. I like to save a tag for hunting in the snow:)

We sadly weren't drawn for any doe tags, so I guess its bucks only for this year.  I'm hoping to try and get out this weekend if I can find the time.  I'm getting tired of running nights on ends in the combines.  But boy are the deer hitting those freshly cut corn fields in the middle of the night!

Page has been quiet.  Everyone out fishing and hunting and not online? LOL  Hope everyone is having a safe deer season been hearing a few injuries and I hope everyone can take the time to unload guns and make sure they are on safety while out walking around.

I took a first time deer hunter out over the weekend and he was able to shoot his first deer which was a huge mature doe.  I could tell he was excited because the two person ladder stand which is connected to a 90 year old oak tree was shaking like a leaf.  We are 3/5 tags filled in our hunting party. Doe didn't have a fawn but was running with a few other big does and had a dark black belly which I thought was unique.  A 1.5 year old 6 point was scrawny and still had bleech white legs was taking saturday about 2.5 hours before dark out running around.  Sunday morning a neighbor spooked up my buck and he was a 3.5 year old 4x4 with junk on both G2's to make him a 9 point.

Not a ton of hunting where I'm hunting at and even less shooting.  Opening weekend we only heard two sets of two shots, otherwise all single shots ringing out in the area.  Still hoping for cold weather for ice fishing but I'm starting to get nervous about my December 17th fishing trip up to Red Lake, MN.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?

lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...

A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
