Refresh my memory... If we just go into Trout Lake for the day, we are not required to get a permit in advance. We just fill out the form at the portage. Is that correct?

Fish Head,

I believe that only applies to winter entry.

Day trip canoe only can fill out and use permit at portage. October 1 - April 30 permits at portage cover all trips. We have all been driving to Cook for permits so Y-store would be great.

I think day use motor or camping requires a permit, not self service.

Is it the LaCroix Ranger Station where you pick up the permits now?

Yes just north of Cook.

They are open 7 days 8:00-4:30.

Y-store is open 5am - midnight.

Enjoy your day in paradise Monday, Fred will be working.

Trout have moved down, I would fish 50-80 feet. I use hammered silver back with bright colored spoons. Cisco are schooling up so find them you will find Trout.

It looks like you might be able to get your day permit online as well.  You just select your point of entrance as Trout Lake.  I've never used this so I can't be 100% sure.  Worth a shot.  We are probably heading in with kids on Saturday July 8th for my first time.

Heading up to TL next weekend with my family. Going in Saturday morning Aug 19, coming out sunday evening.  Kids are 6 and 9 years old.  Probably won't do much fishing, but i've heard there's some decent bluegill fishing?  Any tips on where to find them?

I have not been in to Trout since early July but the two islands in portage bay directly across from the portage I had some real good luck in there for some nice keeper gills.  Otherwise the north arm in the far northeast part of it is where I usually do the best for them, the best part about targeting Bluegills, at least for me, is that you will catch Smallmouth as well.  Good luck it should be a blast.

I have not given up on opener yet. Looking back to the 2013 opener we hauled boats on opening day. I am getting a air boat ride to our Pine Island home Friday. The people who fish Little Trout will be anxiously waiting.

First boat in Trout this morning. Dorian came out to much ice. Next boat went to Pine. Portage is open. Check with us on ice conditions.

Photo is worth a thousand words.  I assume that is Trout Lake with Sioux Pine Island, Norway Point, and 5 Sisters Islands in the middle.

That's very interesting...  Ice was supposedly out in Woodland Caribou park, up by red lake...  and here is ice a couple hundred miles south.  Oh well, it's a couple weeks before we go to quetico...

Boats made it to the entrance of Little trout this evening. Trout still has ice but most can be boated through. We open at 7:00 in the morning. 218-404-6524 Thanks Lonnie

Lonny or if someone else can answer do you charge more in Sept to make the special trips or is it the standard rate.  Also on a side note took my two citified nieces up there over the 4th for the day and we absolutely killed the Small mouth and even got a bonus trout, they have both asked when the next time we are going up there.  10 and 7.

Also depends on what you are looking for, the bass fishing will be fantastic find island cast around said island catch 25 bass. HAH  The bluegills might be a little deeper that time of the year.  Walleyes I have two spots I would try that time of year but have never had much success in July and August, that also might be I do it for an hour and 5 pound small mouth start dancing through my head.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
