Camping Trip Advice

Hi everyone.  I am planning a trip for this coming Memorial weekend with my father and father-in-law.  I have been to Voyageurs but it has been several years.  I have a couple questions for anyone who has time to respond.

1.  Where do people generally launch their boats and keep their vehicles?  We are staying near the Ash River Visitor Center.

2.  How do people store fish that they intend to take home?  Is there anywhere that offers freezer space?

3.  If anyone has any input on walleye and smallmouth areas and/or tactics for that time of year, that would be great.

Joe,

 

1. There are three parking lots at the Ash River Visitor Center where you can leave your vehicle and trailer.

2. An important thing to remember is that you cannot be in possession of filleted fish on the waters, unless packaged by a licensed fish packer. Most people that are camping eat the fish as they catch them or them gut them and gill them and keep them on ice.

 I am not aware of any place that will freeze and store them for you. What some campers do is keep there fish in a live box until they are ready to leave and then bring them out live and fillet them on land. Caution here, remember that you can never exceed the possession limit of fish. So if you have some in the box and go fishing for dinner you can still only have possession limit.

3. For walleyes fish wind blown shorelines or along weed lines. Also try some deep spots 30-50 feet if it is calm and sunny. Small mouth try rocky shorelines with rock rubble. Rapalas and tubes work good.
