I'm located in the Mankato area and Yesterday I figured I would try a new lake. So Monday early morning I drove over to faribault and fished Cannon Lake for the first time. Thought it was a nice side lake but found it pretty odd that everyone was so far spread out. Most lakes there seems to be a mini town on the lake... Also it was a  pretty shallow lake.  most of my morning was pretty slow and I figured it would be since it was a new lake to me.... I'm thinking I might give it another shot tho since it wasn't a bad drive from Mankato

What makes it so hard to figure out? I noticed a few humps and maybe two point out there. I would love some info if you don't mind sharing. I know some people are pretty secret about that stuff but if you would even wanna shoot me a private message that would be awesome! Hopefully I'll get back out there shortly

I fished it for the first time ever last weekend.  The best fishing we found (we were targeting Perch) was to find a hump and fish just off it.  Pretty much every spot we checked had around 10' of water.  Then we found a big area in only 6' of water.  We fished just off the hump in about 9.5' and did well.

We have done fairly well there too. Im curious if you were using light rigs with crappie minnows or medium rods with larger jigs and fatheads. I've used both with similar outcomes. Have not had a bit on waxies.

Cannon lake is a reservoir. There is an old river channel as well as old roads under the water. There is a huge expanse of shallow water 6' deep and under where fish can spread out to feed. Very tough to find concentrations of fish. Ice fishing I like to focus on the old roadbed and the old river channel areas. Turns in the channel, humps by the channel or roadbed, and faster drops into deep water (deep being 9' to 12') seem to be the easiest way to find fish. The deepest hole goes 14' - 17' deep.

The walleyes, crappies, sunfish and perch I have caught there always seem to be nice fish.

The reason you don't see tons of people there is because it is a river system reservoir with current flowing through and some of the best fishing can be where the ice is thinner so use caution. Hope that helps.

That's some good info thanks! I didn't know it was a reservoir! So you kind of just sit in a good spot and wait for fish to come to you since it's hard to find a concentration of fish? How big of perch are we talking about?

thanks!

I'm not saying to sit tight, just saying it can take a bit or work. They are very shallow more often than you might think and hard to locate that shallow without spooking them. Drilling a bunch of holes over a long distance and then working them later isn't a bad way to go on nicer days. I've caught 14" perch but when you get into a nice size bunch 10" - 11" perch.

Rick I think your mistaken Cannon Lake is not a reservoir, It has always been a lake. And that being said there are no sunken roads in Cannon. It may just be different bottom structures.

We were using Ultralite Noodle Rods with a 1/16 oz Tungsten jig tipped with Spikes.  We did have a small spoon with a minnow on a deadstick in the holes next to us.  We kept 40 Perch on Friday, threw another 20 or so back.  Caught 2 on the spoon/minnow combo the rest all came on the Spikes.

I am not mistaken, The Cannon River runs through it and the dam is located at Kings Mill Dam Park in Faribault. The road is there you just don't realize it is a very old road.

Thinking about fishing that lake myself, are people driving on Cannon? Are there springs on that lake?

I haven't been out there for about 10 days, but it was 10"-11" then. Didn't even register a foot. Not sure if we have gained a lot since then

I hope every one understands that Rick is right, this is a reservoir, and the Cannon runs right through it and there is in fact quite a bit of current in the lake. Take caution when driving around on Cannon, that lake always has strange ice (I grew up on Wells, the other reservoir just down stream from it). Do not go anywhere near either bridge/channel at each end, stay way away from them with any vehicle

That makes a lot of sense.  We were wondering why we didn't see any vehicles on Cannon.  We saw lots of French & Roberds, and we measured around 10"-14" there.  On Cannon we measured up to 18" in one spot, yet no vehicles.  Another guy reported only seeing 8" of ice, so I'm guessing it's too risky with big swings like that.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
