Ice for the Extravaganza?

Recommended Posts

What are your predictions? I think it's not looking good. If I remember right they have only cancelled once in 25 years, hope it's not twice in 26.

Are you talking the perch Extravaganza on Mille Lacs ?  If so, I think you can be pretty confident there will be lots of ice in Feb. If there was an issue in past years it may have been weather related because of bad winter weather, not lack of ice.

I believe that he is talking about the 1 in Brainerd. Think it is scheduled for mid January.  That's a very good question sptitz.

As a member of The Brainerd Jaycees Extravaganza, I can say that we aren't worried at all. we have never canceled the event in 26 years. It is going to be a great year!

That's a good attitude Gfishing

But realistically I drove by yesterday you can still  put a boat in gull and round was still wide open

as you guys did move it there one year but even that's looking not to likely

I fished it for like 18 yrs in row and  I think its a great event

Good luck

If the ice isn't safe enough they will just move it back a couple weekends into February like they did a couple years back. Not a big deal and yes the show will go on.

Don't want to sound like a party pooper BUT as of 3 pm today this is your contest area. Not looking good if you look at the extended forcast.. Y'all may want to change your reservations for the alternate Feb. date..

  • 2 weeks later...

As I've heard now they have to decide whether to keep it as is, move it or cancel it 10 days before the event....the clock is ticking.

Just to keep good attendance and people from whinninnng

I think the best thing would be to back it up to that  last week-end before the season closes and hope for the best

and give folks time to change plans

From the extended forecast I've read I don't think theres any way

A very smart guy that use to own a resort on Mille Lacs for years told me that with no snow on the ice

and zero temp it would make approx. 1 in 24 hrs and if you do the math no way !!!!!!!!!

just my thoughts

Could not agree with you more , Well said. I know that I would not feel comfortable out there unless I was planning a very large group Polar Plunge !!!!

My brother cancelled our room up there today. 1 inch of ice would be made at 0 degrees if its new ice. The more ice you get the slower the ice is made at that temp. Don't know what they'll do this year.

We should make somewhere between .5-1" of ice each of the next 16 days.  Accuweather is showing single digit and below zero lows starting January 7th.  As long as the snow stays away, I think we'll have plenty of ice, but it is certainly going to be cutting it close.

Just drove by there yesterday

They are just starting to walk on the bay, gull is deep specially where they set up

no wheelers or snowmobiles

I just cant see it happening even if its below zero till the day of contest

Didn't see any cars on round either or north long bay which has been froze over for sometime

as I said just to be contestant friendly they should  make some kind of call sooner than later

just my opinion

No question at all, there will be plenty of ice for the contest.  Every website I've seen has overnight lows between now and the contest from -15 to a max of 5 above.  That is some serious ice making weather.

That is very true with NO snow on the lakes , but guess what ?  There is like 6" of snow on the ground in the brainerd area.:2c:

As of last Sunday, there was very little snow left on land or the lake I was on, in Xlake area. What snow was there was thin and crusty, not fluffy anymore after that heat wave of Friday and Saturday.

Why don't they just stop playing this game every few years and just move the dang thing to 1st-2nd week of Feb?

Well they are driving all over  371 bay the way it appeared yesterday

But as some one said above they  found 8 inches on gull in SOME places

A far cry from 14 needed for the sheriffs approval

The below zero weather is good for a couple days weather this week

As they say just to little to late I don't think you make 8 inches in 2 weeks ,maybe

New Press Release from the Jaycees says that they have been talking with the Sheriff Dept and monitoring ice conditions.  With the forecast, the assumption is that there will be enough ice and everyone should keep plans for the 23rd.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
