Wish I wasn't so dang busy in the spring.  Would love to do more out of state hunts, but....

I'll buy the archery tag here in Minnesota to give me as much time in field as I can manage.  Then I'll hopefully draw for season C over in Sconnie, with a later season there a real possibility.

Season C in Wisconsin has always been a "for sure" thing for me, but the dates line up funny this year, with May 1 being a Sunday, the fishing opener this year falls into season D.  This is the first time I remember that happening.  Hope I can still draw that C tag.

Good Luck Don

Hope you can get that tag as a non-resident. I've had luck getting that when I apply with someone from WI

A little teaser

I know a few places like that in leader. Do you have cattle?

That area is getting better is will level out . I know we are talking about hunting up there the two farms I know of have plenty of birds and a tame group just stays by the house the dogs don't even bug them. Once spring comes they do break up better which is nice

Ok just put in a new order for some calls. I really think it might be the last season for my box call so order a new one same kind. Some more mouth calls even though I still have a bunch un-open just the sound and response I get from my go to calls I have to replace.

Arrows ordered , a few shot gun shells bought I should be already to pattern in . Start shooting the bow a little more season is not far away.

Replaced a few mask that I lost or ripped. You think the list would be smaller every year but just keeps growing . Even looking at a new Turkey vest :).

My plan is to hit Nebraska again. I've reached out to the landowner, but so far haven't heard back yet. I've got two plublic land spots in mind if need be. The main factor to decide is timeframe. If I'm competing on public land then early archery is better. Once gun season hits, then the land I use gets hammered.

With the new rules in MN, I plan on getting a bow license and hunting when I have time. My daughter wants to get her first bow bird and I've always offered to take my dad and or brothers out. We'll see.

I may need some new mouth calls, but otherwise, my kit is pretty solid. I'm really happy with the items purchased last year and I refurb'd my ground blind that that should still be solid.

It's getting to be that time of year again!!!

Gonna be hunting two states this year for ol' Tom Turkey.

4 adults and 2 kids are heading to the area of Niobrara, NB to hunt in mid-April.  We've got a cabin booked at the Niobrara State Park.  It will be our first trip down there.  Planning on hunting the Santee Sioux reservation and possibly getting a state tag and hunting some state land as well.  I retired my compound last summer, so I'll be using my recurve, which will be a fun challenge!!!  Might even bring some fishing equipment in case of any shorefishing opportunities for channel cats.

Then my wife and I will hit Wadena County here in MN in early May.  Hoping we can have a repeat performance of last year, but with long beards this year instead of jakes.

Good luck to everyone this spring!!!  I'm looking forward to stories and pics!!!

Brian

Geez Brian, as if archery wasn't hard enough, you're going with a stick?  Wow, good luck with that.  Hope to see some pictures of that!

Got a new farm to hunt in Wisconsin this year.  Looks pretty promising I'd say.

Was out ice fishing last night after work. Had 6 gobblers coming walking by going to roost. Talk about getting my blood going for Turkey time.

NE cannot come fast enough that early bow season is great. We leave April 2nd till the 10th just after the youth season opens.

We just picked up new land in MN and I cannot wait to hunt this spring. We walked the land last week lots turkey sign and deer sign. One giant buck going about 160 still head gear and birds gobbling. Turkey time is now. With the deer and turkey show this weekend it's going to make it harder to get through the weeks.

Hoyt4,

Have you hunted Nebraska much?  If so I'd like to exchange some PM's with you.

A group of us are headed to the Niobrara area April 15th.  This will be our first time hunting turkeys in Neb.

Thanks,

Brian

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
