Got out by myself for a few hours this morning finally!

Tried a couple of my deep water spots with zero bites there!

Fished a couple of shallower areas and boated 14 walleyes and a huge jumbo in those spots.

14' to 26' were my best depths.

All fish were caught on Lindys with a minnow as bait.

Pike suckers, creek chubs and fathead chubs all got bites.

No slot fish but most fish were keepers that ranged from 13" to 16" .

Not many boats out where I was fishing today.

Water temps ranged from 55 degrees in Pike Bay to 59 degrees in Big Bay.

Same story here Cliff. We tried to fish some deep water in Big Bay but the wind and waves finally got the best of me. I moved over to Frazier Bay and found fish in 23' along the west shoreline of Fectos. Lots of fish with 15" the best. We checked Daisy Bay on the way home and hit a jackpot of high end eaters and slot fish to 21.5". We've been getting some really nice jumbos these past few days also.

Good Fishing,

MarkB:)

I had a tough time finding an eater, I headed east and did manage one but those pesky 22ers" kept getting in the way:D. Found most of my fish yesterday in water less than 20' deep.

What a great fall day out on the lake this morning!

This was one of those days that I wait all fall to get out on the lake by myself and leisurely fish at my own pace at spots that I know usually hold fish.

Not a real hot bite in those spots this morning but some quality fish were there!

I boated 3 smallies that were like triplet 18 inchers,  One 36 inch pike, and 5 very nice keeper walleyes that were 14" to 15-1/2" fish.

Sounds like the weather is going to change now though.

Yesterday was one of the best days I have ever had on Vermilion.  A mix of walleyes and smallies in 30' with pike suckers, a 20" leader and a 1/0 hook.  I was just off an underwater point that topped off around 15'. Most of the walleyes were 20-22", and most of the smallies were around 17".  Largest walleye was 24" and largest smallie was 20".  There were a few smaller ones, but not many.  The bite was constant, the weather was great, the fall colors were peak... it just doesn't get any better.

Coming up tomorrow to close the cabin for the year over the weekend. Looks pretty chilly forecast. I assume rainbows and half crawlers would be the ticket? Any sense on depth or structure

In Frazer/Smarts Bay area

Very cold and windy today but we managed to boat 48 walleyes and 2 jumbos!

Lindy with a minnow. Both large and medium sized minnows got bit! Even caught a few on Pork Crawlers!

26' to 32' depths were best for me.

Try theWest side of Fectos Point or way up in the West end of Frazer Bay.

I was up for 3 days last weekend and the bite was very solid. I had to sift through them for keepers but steady bite including some nice fat healthy 23" fish. They were not super aggressive so I found not to jig them but slowly lift off the bottom about 6 inches then drop it to the bottom and let it sit. I lost a jig in the rocks and a half an hour later I caught a fish with it in its mouth. Monday as the cold front was coming though they liked more action so we jigged pretty heavily for a while and caught 35 in 2 hours but sure earned them as the wind and rain came in. 23 to 30 was my best fishing.. I guess the best advise I can give is that don't give up on your jig until you have tried some different techniques with it because it made all the difference in the world for us. also there were times you really had to let them take it before you set the hook. I had my best luck with toms tackle gold and pink. good luck out there

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
