Heading up to Grand Marais Oct 21 - 26. Staying at Trailside and hoping to hit Hungry Jack, Pike, and Two Island Lakes. Looking for smallmouth mostly, maybe walleye. Any recent general reports? Not asking for specific locations. Have a great day! Jake

Well as of late the walleyes are deeper and the smallies are loving topwater or most things moving. Do not rule out a trip to Tom Lake for some walleyes same goes with Devilfish. That time of year current areas can be good as the whitefish start heading to spawning area if the water temps are right.

I will be up there last week in September. Bring warm clothes. Last year we froze in a cold rain.  I was up at HJ in June.  Did pretty well.  In Oct look for everything deep.  Need to trust your locator because they will just be roaming around. Look for deep water humps if you can find them.   If you are going to go to Hungry Jack anyway, I would hit the two other lakes right next door.  West Bearskin had some pretty decent Walleye action.  Clearwater had both walleye and Smallmouth.  We hit the Smallmouth real well on the east end of the lake past the palisades.  You will be in BWCA so it is a 10hp limit there. Plus you need to fill out a permit at the landing.

That time of year I'd imagine the lakes will have turned over by then. Some of the sheltered areas might already have skim ice as well. I would guess big swim baits or minnow baits would be ideal, or even shiners or sucker minnows. I'll be up there that same week, but I'll be hitting the stream trout lakes. Definitely bring warm clothes! I wear my ice armor suit while up there...The last 3 years I've been up there the temps have rarely gotten above 40, and had to deal with very windy conditions, and even snow! But you'll be lucky to see other people...after MEA weekend, it's pretty lonely up there ;)

I was in shock how many hunters were up in Grand Marais. The most I have ever seen and the DNR officer said the same thing. I was up there with a fellow Fishing Minnesota member and we got 6 grouse and one snowshoe. 2 of the grouse were Spruce Grouse males which is good to see. We saw one moose and a few ducks. We never made it out duck hunting, but some of the ducks we seen were goldeneyes. Here is most of the grouse and bunny.

Yeah, we stopped going up there on MEA weekend a few years ago. Moose madness is fun for the kids and all, but waiting 1 more week is way cheaper, and there are ALOT less people in the woods. I'll be heading up on friday, hopefully the grouse are out and the trout are hungry!

When I was younger, we used to shoot ducks while grouse hunting. We would come up to lakes along the road and stop the truck, get our guns out and walk along the lake. There would always be ducks hanging out along the shoreline by the roads. Then we would retrieve them with a big spoon and treble hook...we would end up catching a few pike in the process as well.

Well, just got back from an extended weekend. We were treated to a beautiful sunrise over the lake at the lester river on friday morning. And from there the weather went south! By the time we got up to Grand Marais, and up to pine trestle lake, it was about 35 degrees, raining, cold, windy...and I couldn't have been happier! The splake were hungry, so I was easily able to overlook my soggy gloves and wet ice suit. Caught quite a few, but only kept 1. Things were slower on esther lake, only caught 3. Sunday, we fished a secret lake, and the splake action was ok, kept 3. Found another secret lake, and caught 2 from shore...and was also "attacked" by a mink. Then today, we just did a little shore fishing at bogus, trout, mink, and kimball lakes. And my 7 year old daughter caught the 1 and only rainbow trout of the trip. We only see a few grouse...my dad didn't even get any shots off. I might have to stay an extra day up there next fall. There's just too many trout lakes to choose from!

Forgot to mention a wild animal encounter...while getting the canoe loaded up at esther lake, I was drinking a rip it citrus energy drink. I set it down for a few minutes to get the last things put in the canoe. As I turn around and go to grab my drink, a chipmunk tipped the can over and was drinking my energy drink! Can't imagine a chipmunk anymore hyper than they already are

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
