Out on lake 1 this afternoon and had about a foot of ice everywhere I was.  Couple trucks out there as well.  Bite was marginal but managed to ice a few decent perch, crappie and a walleye.  Missed a big walter or northern on the deadstick.  Set the hook for a couple head shakes and then he was gone.  Had to leave right before prime time unfortunately.  Have a feeling people did pretty well out there while the sun was setting.

I used my truck to pull my little 6.5 x 12 wheel house around a bit Yesterday. I had the electric drill and a long bit with to do quick ice thickness checks where I travelled. I was finding mostly 15+ inches of ice Yesterday, but I'm sure there are some areas with less.

What part of the lake were you on? Thought I saw a truck with a smaller white wheel house on 3rd.

Checked the ice again just now, still only seeing 12-13", lots of traffic an a few mid sized wheel houses being pulled out.

Nice. I was spying from my deck. Think I'll be joining you tomorrow with my house.

Be careful, under the deeper snow I was finding only 9 inches of ice. I found 9-14 inches of ice in a small area on #2 and the ice was flooding where we put the shack.

Did you pull your house out with a truck or wheeler?

how did the ice fare after this warm spell? am i still ok to drive small vehicle out on the ice?

There were still vehicles of all sizes all over the lake today. I'd never say "you're safe" but that's what I saw.

I was out on Thursday and found a spot that was only 8 inches on #2. And then there is a guy racing around in a suburban.

Anybody been out on Forest lately?  Wondering how much snow is on top of the ice?

Not much snow around. Pretty bumpy with wind packed snow and refreeze in most areas.

Who all is pulling their house off Forest before the rain and warmer temps this weekend?

I pulled my shack off Today. It was sitting in a lake that was only getting deeper. Very scary. If I would have drilled any holes who knows if they would have grown and swallowed the shack by Sunday afternoon.

There are some areas out there with around 8 inches of water on top of the ice, so be careful. That won't make for good ice much longer.

I actually pulled my house off last night because I didn't want to drive through the water like you said. Rode the 4 wheeler out from my yard tonight and it's just a mess out there.

Anyone been out lately?  Thinking about walking out of the main launch on lake 1 this weekend.  I'm assuming the ice is still plenty safe for walking out?  It's been a while since I've been out.

There has been a lot of buckled ice on the shoreline recently, but past that it still looks ok, not much activity out there lately, seen one portable way out there yesterday evening (Lake One).

Admittedly haven't been out yet but have seen snowmobiles and wheelers venturing around the lake. A few spear shacks have been put out. Any reports on ice thickness? Appears to be some slushy spots too by the sled tracks you can see from shore.

Hi there,

i talked to Mike's bait on 8 and they said the thickness varies a lot between 3-10". Forest lake #1 was in better shape because it's shallower, #3 is the deepest and not as solid.

i plan on going out for dad alone time before the Yuletide storm Thursday, I'll post what I see on #1.

Merry christmas all.

Was out on Tuesday on Lake one, 7" of ice, got some flooding after drilling a few holes.  There are a few small permanent shacks out, and there were a half dozen or so in portables.

Went out on 3 today with a sled and wheeler

5 to 7 inches of ice where we were. Bite was good, great jigging and a few flags.

Crack with a lot of slush growing since yesterday going across 3. Not a problem getting through it yet, hopefully with cooler temps next week it will firm back up.

Is the ice good enough on Forest to go anywhere on the lake with a sled yet FishingFL?

I can't say going anywhere is good at this point. I haven't ventured around or drilled enough holes to comfortably say that. Will be interesting after tomorrow if we really do get rain storms too.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
