Red Lake crappie boom is back! In depth outdoors had a show on upper Red where they landed a bunch of nice slabs. The bite is even better in the spring.

sleep I and few others have been catching crappies out since people (most) stopped going after them. A video doesn't make it a crappie boom.

I would guess that would be a no Frank? Buddy plans on keeping his access open and a few rentals out there as his houses have actually done well the last few weeks catching the elusive yet still catchable upper red lake crappie. I also will keep the heat on my house's just like the hotel commercial "We will leave the lights on for you" only here at cookies on upper red lake will leave the heat on for you and the lights.

2/19/15 started fishing at noon. By 1:30 pm had 5 walleyes all b/w 15-16". Catch and release from there on out. 6 pm crappie bite started and when non stop 1 after another all 12"-15.5" till 10 pm. All weekend went this way. Walleyes pretty much all the time and crappies starting at 6pm. 4 guys all got our limits of walleyes and crappies with in 2 hours. Cleaning 40 crappies that size its lots of work, but well worth it. Friday and Saturday all the same. I had no problem catching and releasing as most crappies had eggs in them. I'd rather catch 2 fish limit then go to a lake and not catch a single fish all weekend. Plenty of fish for us to eat up there and take home. Buddy does a great job and had to work to keep up with the cold temps and propane heaters not liking the weather.

I'm thinking about planning a trip up in a few weeks to target pannies. Is hillmans the only road open in march?

As far as I know Buddy Hillmen is the only one that plans on maintaining a road. As of right now the winds and snow are blowing out of the south and we will be re opening 10 miles of road tomorrow morning. Please come and support us as it will be a very long day tomorrow. The elusive yet still catchable upper red lake crappie are out there just need some fishermen to help find them as we will be working on the Hillmen's highway tomorrow leading to the crappie highway. Not to be confused with hillmens highway which you could land a 747 on. Lets go find them raw raw

Will he still maintain the road after the ice house deadline? I won't be going up for my lake of the woods trip until March 21, but stopping at URL on the way up is looking more promising with each passing day smile

With no fishermen coming to generate some income at some point he will have to quit plowing. As of now we both have a few houses out there for at least the next 12 days. Mother nature could change things but as of now it looks good weather wise. The road is wide open to the mother load if you can find them.

Just hafta fish next to frank is all! With crosscountry travel available we will be fishing on cookies secret spot. An area not fished for years and has always produced crappies. Cant wait

Hole hopping and spread out. Fish outside the house as much as possible. Im assuming you are out of hillmans. The magic hour ofsundown has been historically best. But lately the reports have been well after dark. But you never know. All my reprts have been first hand from cookie but ill be up come Thursday for 4 days in the past we have always been able to catch em all day but hole hopping. Lots of drilling and spread out. And find a fishy area and be there at prime time. You can be 20 feet away from a guy catching em one after the other and not mark a fish.

We are out of beacon harbor. The crappies we have been getting the last couple weeks have been coming around 9pm or early in the morning, 3am or so. One interesting thing I have noticed is that where we were catching crappies the walleyes were running really small, the spot we are on now the walleyes are much larger, could this be some sort of sign to why there's no crappies here or is that just coincidence? If all goes well we will be up next Wednesday - Friday.

Yes small eyes. Or scuffits as cookie calls them. Also tiny perch. If you are catching small/tiny perch during the day youre in a good area. I think the crappies are eating those tiny 2-4" perch. Just my opinion.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.

got mine done........for the cabin.....ready for summer festivities!!!!!!   there was still frost in the ground...........but good gawd are the lakes low!!!!!
    • CigarGuy
