Which One? New Ice Rod

gonehunting

Recommended Posts

Looking for some new ice rods that are 32-34" in length that have the reel seats in them. I bought a couple nice Scheels NOS 32" rods last year and am looking for something similar. Any suggestions? Hard to find with reel seat in them. Willing to pay for a good one.

Willing to pay for it?

Once you go custom rod you'll never turn back.

Choose your blank, choose your handle, choose your guides, choose your colors...

Not cheap though.

I am not a fan of many mass produced ice rods. IMO 95% of them are junk.

Any suggestions on customs? I'm sure there are alot. I'm open to mass produced also as long as they are quality.

Thorne is the only place I know and I buy blanks for my own custom rods there.

There are a lot of custom rod builders out there (and on this site) that might be able to help you out.

I don't quite have the skills to make rods for other people, or I would help you out myself.

Tuned up custom rods, thrones, dh custom rods are just a few names off the top of my head. Check out their websites and do a g o o g l e search for custom ice rods you will find many.

Thanks for all the replies. I will check out Thorne and DH since they are closest to me. Heard a lot of good things about each both here and many other sites. Much appreciated.

I love my Thorne noodle for sunnies and crappies. I prefer my DH for walleye. Both are great rods. Might have to pick up a TUC for this winter and give it a try.

Fished with a Thorne Perch Sweetheart with the titanium guides last season. Caught Perch, Eyes and crappie on it. I believe it was worth the money.

Another vote for Thorne Bros custom rods. I have several, my son has a couple. They are simply the best, use the best components, and have a master rod craftsman in Lonnie Murphy.

If you're looking at mass produced rods, I've had good luck with the Clam and Frabill rods. They have the reel seat already which is nice if you prefer that setup. They'll run $40-50. But customs are so much better if you really want the best. I myself run with customs from Bricker's Custom Rods, but I've also heard good things about Thorne Bros rods. Might try one of those someday.

Thorne Brothers are way over price for what you get in my opinion. They are a decent quality rod, but many better custom options out there. I bought one to try because of the hype.........Not impressed at all. If your looking for a custom rod, I would go with Adam Bricker and check out Brickers custom rods. The quality, price, and options hands down make a thorne brothers look like a cheap ht rod.

Adam Bricker rods are visually eye candy. Im sure he uses quality blanks for his rods. However I dont know if his blanks are custom built and turned for performance. Get one and you may feel more like hanging on your wall rather then putting it to use. One looking for the best performance and lightest rods possible may not need all the added weight or eye candy cost.

Thorne Bros, DH, & TUCR from what I been told all tuned their blanks for performance to their own R&D. So you know your getting the best tested blank from hardcore ice anglers for your money. Build components are very important and its key that when you choose one you not short yourself on a custom rod.

Rods I recommend are the DH Perch Pounder & Pantom, Thorne Bros Quiverstick, TUCR Noodle and Quick Tip.

As a rod builder myself, dusty up at dh is one of three guys I would trust to build me a rod should I not have time to do so, he will listen to what you need and help you out when deciding. He will also work around your budget and won't push recoils if you don't want them like the others do. Also check out glacier lakes outdoors or glo rods, I think they have a Facebook page. Andy is a great guy and being small he doesn't charge high dollar like Thorne and bricker. If you need is contact info pm me.

You need to learn to differentiate opinions from facts. Just because others "suggest" a rod or builder does not mean there is any "hype" involved, do not degrade a person or product because your opinion is different than someone else. You interpret lots of opinions as "hype" when they are not. Get a grip. you chose to purchase an item that you don't like, sell it or hang it up but stop bashing a co. or product because your opinion of it does not correlate with the masses.

krugers noodle rod just feels better than my TB noodle. i would suggest him first, TUC, then DH for a custom rod. otherwise, go TB.

I have fished with quite a few customs but if your looking for a real nice custom rod with an affordable price range hands down DH. Thats all I fish with and there is no comparison. If your looking at that length Id suggest the longboard noodle if you dont like it bring it back but I guarantee you will want more rods after you get one. Thorne brothers have very good rods also the price is a little higher than DH.

It looks to me like you have an issue with someone who has a difference of opinion from you. i have the right to post an opinion, and just because it isn't a rave review of a product doesn't mean it shouldn't be shared. Get over it not everyone is going to agree on things. You might has well take your lecture to those that wanna fight over flashers or other things because the opinion might not correlate with the masses.

No problem with your opinion or anyone else's, but calling a majority opinion "hype" is carp just cause you don't agree with it.

hey Eric, have you used the G.L.O. rods much? which model(s)? how would you compare the noodle to TB's or DH"s. I ordered some blanks from the same supplier they use and didn't get to use them enough to really get a feel for different applications. they felt great with the UL setups with tungsten pannie jigs. I can't hardly wait to really put them to the test this winter. I also ordered several other blanks from several suppliers. 12 new blanks in all. December can't come fast enough

To be honest, not personally....but, I have held a few of them, and have a bunch of buddies that use them. I'm set on rods for the next ten years or I would buy a few myself haha!
