Great win tonight. They are headed in the right direction.Fun to watch a team thats playing even the top teams close. We could be 5-0 with just a few less turnovers and some decent officiating. DrJ

Great win, terrific play by the Bigs. Good pressure D throughout the game. This is one I didn't think they would get, the Barn was rockin!!!

I really like Mathieu and Eliason's development is encouraging. No real stinker games like with Tubby. Craft isn't that great without Sullinger and other great players around him.

Hope we can get a practice facility built and keep Pitino. Good luck to Nanne on the fundraising. Hate to say it, but I think he will go to a better program in a few years.

Wow, that game was hard to watch, not because they lost, but because there was a foul called every ten seconds of the game. This is suppose to be the hard nosed big 10 basketball, not every time someone drives to the hoop they automatically get a foul call. This new strict officiating is getting way over the top.

No kidding. A total of 50 personal fouls called in the game at IA City, 29 on MN 21 on IA, not including the technical. There was no flow just stoppages of play and often with no clue as to why watching on the tube. Give IA credit. They outplayed us in the 2nd half and stopped Dre Hollins. They deserved to win. Let's hope they get to see how it feels when the shoe's on the other foot at the Barn Feb. 25th. Maybe Franny will throw another tantrum! smile

I agree about the fouls,it seemed as if Ia was in the 1&1 before the first tv timeout. The last 1:13 of the first 1/2 changed the rest of the game as I was already yelling at the tv about finding a way to stop D. Hollins.Ia won the battle on the boards & at the free throw line plus 5 guys in double figures(2 off the bench), didn't hurt either.I'm sure I'll be watching the return match at The Barn as it always is a good rivalry.I just hope Marble & White play a full game Wed. at Ann Arbor.I know how you guys feel though as this is the most excited I have been about Hawkeye basketball since Dr. Tom.

Elliason gets in foul trouble, you lose your best player on the first offensive set, and you watch your squad win wire to wire without a doubt. What a game. 4 games in a row against top 15 teams, you go 2-2 and lose one in overtime on the road. I'll take it.

Typical Wisconsin basketbrawl...Just like players did to Kobe and Jordan, trying to run underneath a great player so they land on a shoe and twist an ankle. You can challenge a shot but at least give the guy room to land. It might not be illegal but it is unethical.

Nice job by Mathieu, Malik Smith, and Big Mo.

Where are those people that said we couldn't do better than Tubby now? Teams never get better if they are content with mediocrity.

Pitino is really sticking it to all those anonymous coaches that said his style would never work in the Big Ten. He doesn't even have a full complement of players that match his playing style - imagine how good this team could be if he gets to that point.

There is still a lot of season left as we're a couple games short of halfway, but they are going to be ranked next week and have enough winnable games left to dance, in Pitino's first year and with a team widely viewed as rebuilding (I remember thinking they were only better than NW, PS, and Neb) nonetheless. It's been a long time since the Gophers had a team that was this fun to watch. Tubby had some good players and teams with potential, but he never opened things up or they never got to that point that they were a joy to watch. Right about this time under Tubby, they would start their February and March swandive, but with Pitino and the confidence he's instilled, I see them seizing the opportunities and getting some more key victories. Time will tell.

It's too bad that Pitino didn't get more time and have this season to show to Minnesota's star studded 2014 recruiting class. He really has utilized the talent; you can't doubt his x's and o's nor his ability to coach up and develop players.

Biggest difference with this team vs. the past years..... The freedom and flow on offense. Too many times Tubby's teams would be chucking something up, fading away as the shot clock expired. These guys attack the bucket, are always ready to shoot and share the ball unbelievably well. As a coach, last night was fun to watch.... free flowing, always making the play when the needed one and taking advantage of opportunities... and there is NOTHING better than see Bo Ryan lose!

Completely agree, that is a dirty play. The NBA has done something about it and is finally calling fouls on it, the NCAA needs to follow suit.

Big Mo was awesome last night. He couldn't play more than 2 minutes last year without needing a blow. His hard work on the diet is paying off.

We could't even run in bounds plays with Flubby. Nice to see the keep away at the end of the game with two Pitino guys.

It is very fun watching these guys play like a team! To see players improve through out the year. The Barn looks like a great place to watch basketball again!!

The Gophs play way better style of basketball under Pitino then Tubby. Tubby's teams always seamed lucky to be in a game and now with Pitino you expect them to be in the game and you feel the team has a chance to compete and win even against the better coaches/teams. Fun team-Fun game!! Go Gophs!!!!

Quite a letdown game. Played from behind all game. Only Malik Smith came to play. Poor free throw shooting by both sides and 9 turnovers by DeAndre Mathieu. No gimmes in the Big Ten. Doesn't matter that they were missing Dre Hollins, gotta win these type of games.

I agree Scoitt. The Goph's played terible except for 1 player.

This game should not have been a problem at all.

First game that I've really paid attention to. Didn't realize how tiny that PG is. Be surprised if he makes the season without breaking down.

Sure would be nice if our senior leader Austin Hollins made an appearance anytime this Big 10 season.

Other than that dunk against Wisconsin he has been very passive and just kinda floats around the perimeter. With his athleticism he should be crashing the offensive boards, and making cuts to the basket without the ball.

I love the up-tempo style of play and the 3 ball, but without any balance you'll win some games you should lose and lose some games you should win. It looked like neither Hollins played yesterday!!! But you have to give credit to Nebraska and coach Miles, they beat us at our own game. Thus is life on the road in any major college conference.

Wow! Some major upsets in the B1G 10 last night with Penn St. picking off Ohio St. in Columbus and Northwestern doing the same to Bucky in Madison. Gophers will need to keep the backcourt pressure and tempo up in the Barn Saturday against Northwestern. Crawford looks like he's on a mission.

Forgot to mention make your free throws and don't turn the ball over! Can't expect to win when you shoot yourself in the foot like that. Dre Hollins needs to get well soon.

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
