Need New Trailer Tires

Question

This is a pic of tires I currently have along with info on them, can anyone plz chime in on what this is in todays standards, I have no idea how old they are but seems like 4 bolt is difficult to find (for me)

B78-13ST

Load Range G (I think)

4 bolt rim

Max Load 1315 lbs. @ 50 PSI

I have a different tire on each side but both say same info, the cracking is getting real bad on sides and I just want to be prudent b4 murphys law takes over.

I don't know if I can get bigger tires than these even though max load states 1315lbs each gross trailer weight is 3,000lbs. would like to hit that mark with tires if possible just to be safer.

Any tire shop should have and be able to swap tires but if you need new rims with them you can try unclaimed freight in Milaca. I just looked at Northern tools website and they show 4 bolt rim and wheel combos for $120.

B-4 we all rush out to shop on-line how about we check local Fleet Farm or one of the many tire shop chains or a local trailer place. Snap a camera photo or two and show them what you have and get their reccomendations regarding load raings.

Buying local is GOOD.

Amateur, there are probably half a dozen tire shops in the Elk River area. Hitch up the rig and go to a couple of them. That's what you'd do with your car, isn't it? Give the locals a chance to keep their employees employed. If their prices are way out of line, then talk to them about it or go elsewhere.

Those are load range C tires that you have on the trailer. I found D rated (1600@65 PSI) at etrailer.com for $10 more than the C rated ones. I get more miles on truck and trailer tires by going up a rating and having the stronger sidewall. Less flexing means they also run cooler which can't hurt either.

I replaced mine last summer at Discount Tire. I had about the same vintage tires with the same problems.

I have been very pleased with the new tires.

if the only thing wearing out is the tire why replace the rim? The rim is probably half of the cost, just buy the tires local and have them mounted and balanced, the size referenced is an old school sizing label used on biased ply tires and can be cross referenced to current sizing and there is some one there with direct knowledge to what you are asking.

I asked this same question earlier this year. I had Carlisle brand tires on my trailer and they wore very bad. Most everyone here said to stay away from them. I ended up with Goodyear Marathons and like them so far. I tried to get just the tire without the rim, but the dealership said the rim is like 10 bucks. I bought the rim and tire already mounted and just swapped them out at home, way easier than lugging the boat around.

It's also not a bad idea to have them balanced. The pre-mounted marathons that I bought earlier this year were not balanced.

Spent $10 each to have them balanced. One less wobble when going down the road.

I have goodyear marathons on my shorlandr trailer and I just noticed that the outside row of each tire is worn funny. Just the outside, NOT both inside and outside.

The rest of the tread looks new yet.

The tires are 3 years old and I just came back from Canada which was a total trip of nearly 800 miles.

This wear pattern is perplexing to me. Doesnt appear tire pressure related.

So, what would cause this? The trailer was brand new when I bought it as were the tires. I always check tire pressure and max PSI cold is 50. I set it at 45 cold.

Called the local tire shop and they want $177 a tire. I told them I got mine from the boat dealer on a rim for less than that. Granted it was 3 years ago. Crooks.

Find another tire shop and tell them the situation. They MAY be able to correct it, or tell you who can. Sounds slight to me and I frankly do not know how much you can "adjust" the rather basic suspension system on a boat trailer.

Tire prices are totally goofy!!

I did a little "googling" and it appears my condition MAY be caused by unbalanced tires. They are cupping on the outside. Sooo, I will try that and see if it helps. Not sure if these tires can be swapped on the rims to rotate the other direction, but that may be another option to try and get more life out of them. There is tons of tread left on the inner 3/4 of each tire.

I do tend to pull fast so Im sure Im exceeding the mechanical capabilities of the tires. :-)

Oh! Okay, guess I assumed tires in balance. That is more than likely what is going on. Those are pretty decent trailer tires. Have used that tire on couple RV's (larger sizes of course).

Got with a balancing shop.

Oh yeah, I dont think its the tires' fault at all. OVerall very pleased. When I first saw the issue this weekend I was thinking this is just awesome, now what is wrong, but it may not be that big of a deal.

I read somewhere they are speed rated for 37 mph. Im going faster than that in my driveway. :-)

I couldn't find anything about the speed rating from Goodyear but according to the Tread Source website, Marathon's are H rated which is 130mph.

This should come as no surprise, but I saw it on Walmart's site. Im sure they are confusing LOAD with SPEED.

Tire prices are totally goofy!!

You can thank "The Kenyan" for that, one of the FIRST things he did was

put a 38 percent tariff on all Chinese tires, tire business has been in

chaos ever since. BTW MOST trailer tires are Asian imports.

I was wondering if H rated meant something different for trailer tires versus car tires. Who knows, it might.

just got my new tires, I am fortunate, old ones were really bad, worse than I even thought, when I pulled em off, they were worse on inside, gotem for $80 including balancing at local shop, also picked up their last deep cycle battery for trolling for $90,not bad I thought

side note, noticed these "hairs" on inside of axle behind tire when changing them today, plz tell me this is ok, wife may have coronary otherwise full-37274-34926-img_62261.jpg

You tell us what that is. Looks like 1 lb test, but I find that hard to believe. Is it plastic when you tore it off or plant like? Weird though

did not touch it, afraid it may have been something to do with axle and really did not want to discover any more necessary repairs this week sleep

That looks like fish line to me, take it off. Also take the hub off the axle, it could have got into the bearning or ruined the seal.

      On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
