Feeding Frenzy on Rainy!

Recommended Posts

WOW! The Rainy Lake walleyes are starting to eat everything in sight. Some people talk about complicated patterns and looking for emerging cabbage weed lines or soft bottom transitions....what?? It is as simple as finding soft bottom flat areas where bugs are beginning to come alive. You don't need weed lines...you need new weed growth...as in this year. It typically doesn't grow in distinct lines or edges, but rather patches or spots of weed growth. That's where walleyes will be in June on Canadian Shield lakes from Ontario to Ely. Shallow expanses or bays that are basically flat with depths of 3 to 6 feet of water will be the target zone. If there is some current...all the better.

Thanks for your posting Meilertson. We will be on Rainy on June 27th (firstime) and I am certain we will have good luck. The important thing is not to over think it. We are staying at Woodys and I am sure he will provide us with his insight on where to go. cool

We are staying at Coppen's Resort June 28th for a few days. Any spots like you describe up there? It's our first time. We'd like to catch 4 walleyes to eat, and spend the rest of the day releasing big smallies on top water. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks. Sam

Shouldn't be a problem the walleyes are biting everywhere! Take your pick from casting, jigging, lindy rigs, slip bobbers, and trolling crank baits. Some fish are shallow and others are deeper. Shallow fish might be right up in the pencil reed stocks chasing shiners. You can cast and twich Rapala Husky Jerks, #10's work great. You can also cast jigs tipped with plastic paddle tail minnows or live minnows. Look in the "current" areas up their and you'll see fish in depths exceeding 30 feet.

Smallies are on their beds right now I'd cover water and look for them on their beds. Your staying in a great area of the lake you'll catch fish. Goodluck!
